Chem dippin' carbs - felt seal - and master cylinder q's
« on: February 18, 2014, 10:47:04 PM »
Thought I'd just roll this into one.

I'm rebuilding my 78's carbs and noticed the (what looks like it SHOULD be felt) seals for the choke linkage are SHOT. I don't seem to be finding replacements ANYWHERE.

Does anyone know where some may be?

I'm considering seeing if I can't squeeze some viton orings in there to seal it.

(throttle linkage seals are good, btw)

Aaaaaaaand....

I plan on dipping these in berryman's chem dip. Will that trash my throttle seals, being as they're felt? If so I'll just soak the lower halves.

Finally,

In my master cylinder rebuild I noticed TWO small holes drilled in the bottom of the reservoir. One obviously is used by the piston. But is the other used at all? It looks as though it's not, but just want to make sure there isn't some little passage that branches off of it. 25+ years of sitting turns brake fluid to gooey crystalline awesomeness.

Thanks all.

Those holes in your MC are the fluid return orifices. They must be absolutely clear and clean for the MC to function properly.

I have no input on the felt items. Seek advice form Harisuluv

Those holes in the bottom of the MC...one is fairly large. The other is the return hole and is very small. It needs to be open or you will have problems with the caliper releasing. I use one strand of wire from a wire brush. Heard the E string of a guitar is the right size too. Here is a pic of that hole with the cleaning wire pushed through it.

I have read (on this forum) that the dip will eat the felt rings.

A quick search - using the Search tool - at the top of the web page yields:

For my carbs, I found and used fuel injector o-rings.

I'll be honest, when I started cleaning that MC AGAIN, and again and again and again, I thought FOR SURE, you were full of IT. But alas, there is a second, minuscule hole under there. Had to pull apart a stranded copper wire to get something small enough to clean that bad boy! Mucho grasias!

:) Glad you got the hole cleared there. It seems the only way to get it clear is to push that wire through it. Carb cleaner and stuff just will not cut that hard crud out of there.

I'll look around when I get home.  This was four years ago - and one house move.  Not hopeful . . . but I'll look none-the-less.

UPDATED - looked around - can't find anything.
