'78 550 Cam Cover Modification - Opinions
« on: February 10, 2014, 10:40:53 AM »
  Hi all,

I am looking for opinions on this '78 cb550 cam cover modification. See the image below.

I noticed it in another thread and the O.P. said it was to be able to adjust the cam gear with the cover on still. I know this to be a pain in the ass for sure as I had to 'degree' in my camshaft for ideal timing, but I had to remove the cover each time I made an adjustment. Then reinstall the cover, re set the valves to zero backlash, and re check my degree numbers with the dial indicator. 3 times at least to assure proper measurements. Problem was, putting the cam cover on and off, setting the valves and re installing my dial indicator was tedious and really annoying work. So I understand why this cam cover modification was done. My question is, will cutting out that area of the cam cover cause any negative side effects? Not having that area of the cam chain covered will mean the engine oil is flung up into the breather cover, I just don't know if that's going to cause any issues or not. Opinions would be great.

regards,
Kenny

you might have to try and baffle the breather tube from excessive oil spray?maybe replicate the original design in thin tin and have it secured by those four bolts?

Just buy a junky cover to relieve the tunnel to set timing. Don't use this cover on a running engine.

Ahh I see where your coming from there Bwaller. Just use a modified cover to do all my degree work, and at least, I am only changing the cover out one time to install the non modified cover to run the engine with. Good point! Thanks.
