Hey if those boots are at all hard, including the ones on the other side, you'd really be wise to do that Wintergreen oil thing and soften them up. . If those won't seal you're going be battling weird running issues and sucking unfiltered air into the engine, etc.

It looks as thought the air chamber may be pushed too far back onto the air filter box...Larry

I spent almost an hour last night trying to get the stupid carb boots back on and I just can't do it. The outer two I can get but it looks like the airbox is bent inwards a bit which pulls the inner two tubes away from the carbs.....I'm gonna try and take the air filter/box out and stick my hand in there and push it out and maybe hit it with a heat gun while doing that.....

Loosen the large clamp that holds the chamber to the box and try to slide the chamber forward

I did that, it is completely loose and I still can't get the middle tubes onto the carbs....

Have you tried a heat gun or a hair dryer to soften the boots up.  Then put some sort of boy butter on them and push them over the carbs. Maybe that'll get those suckers to fit.

Well I got the boots back on the carbs and airbox! Took some heat and force haha. Now I just gotta button up the rest of the bike (put on the new cables, clean rust off clutch lever, put in the Dyna S ignition, etc etc etc)

It's just one thing after another.....The new clutch cable I got from 4into1 was thicker than the original by a decent amount so when I tried to feed the cable through the actual clutch lever it would fit so I tried to ever so slightly bend it open more and it snapped.....Gotta wait for a new one to get here and it won't be here till Tuesday.

If you got the cheaper clutch cable for 10$ it had a disclaimer that it needs filing to fit, that's why so cheap.

File the cheapie or buy the 20$ one

Same here, had to file it slightly to fit. Hard lesson for you, bit those cable ends are a form of solder I think and soft and easy to shape with a fine file.

No no no I used a dremel to make the cable end fit, the actual cable itself was too thick to feed into the lever....Like you know how you put the cable end into the hole in the lever and then bring the cable around through the slot in the lever? That slit was too narrow for the cable it'self.

It's just one thing after another with this....I am so close to getting it back on the road but today the battery strap broke due to being old and brittle and now i'll probably have to wait a few days for a new one to arrive and 4into1 doesn't have any in stock so.....  >:(

Another trick to get the airbox seated on the two center carbs is to push them on through the rearmost opening on the airbox. I do this by removing the air filter and sticking my hand into the filter housing while holding something to push with such as a screwdriver held backwards so the end of the handle contacts the airbox. It still requires some work, but allows you to press exactly where you need force.

This is exactly what I did, worked well.

Finally got her back on the road! Ugh that took longer than I wanted but it doesn't leak oil anymore and the frame is now patched up! The only thing is it bogs super bad on WOT or high RPM....I have that Dyna S ignition I need to put in and it revs perfectly fine when not under load.....

Looking real good  :D
Subtle changes have made sure there's no question it's still a CB400F.
Regarding the Bogging, I'm having the same issue on my recently bought CB400F.
I'm suspecting electrics are my problem (odd plugs and caps + non OEM points) but it's also got a shorter than original new muffler.
Waiting for the rain to stop so I can test it out with it's new plugs, caps and swapped points.
Idles a lot smoother with these.
If this doesn't fix it, I'll be looking at putting the original but grubby exhaust on to test for fuel mix problems.
Opening carbs will be last on my list

Keep us posted on progress of yours

Glad I could help! Gonna put my dyna S ignition in this weekend and hope that makes some of the bogging go away, I still want to rebuild my wheels this summer as well but I just want to ride right now.
