Tank badge emblem removal
« on: February 18, 2014, 06:43:33 PM »
I have a 1975 Honda CB550K, I pulled the snap in emblems off but there are some brackets behind them. Are these permanently affixed to the tank? How can I remove these with denting the tank, I feel like I would have to leverage off the tank to pry them off. If possible. I couldnt find a part number for just the bracket so I assumed it was part of the tank. Picture for reference.

Thanks

These are spot welded to the tank and do not come off. If you want a badge-less tank you could very carefully break them off around each spot weld and then grind/sand down the spotwelds, but as you still are left needing to fill the area with filler, it's more common to simply bash it in till it's flush and then hide it with filler...

Couple of things: they are spot welded but are also a prime area for pinhole leaks. Have you checked that no fuel leaks from those areas?

If you do remove the mounting brackets, it's best to fill those areas with weld and file them down flush. If you rely on body filler, it will crack over time due to expansion of the tank (hot and cold temps moving the metal seasonally).

Don't "bash them in" as you are only stretching the metal and possibly introducing more likelihood of leaks.

I figured they were welded on. I always wondered how people smoothed these out. Unfortunately I bent one out a tad bit when I was messing around with it. I'll probably just end up grinding off the majority of it and then doing as you suggested and fill it with weld. There's no problem doing MIG on this really thin metal?

Mig is fine. The tanks are not really that thin, you'd be surprised at how thick actually they are. Double check the pinch weld at the bottom too while you have your welder out. There can be some rust leaks there too.

Fortunately this is a perfectly ride-able bike, not much rust. To be expected of it's age but not like a barn yard find. It was half full of gas when I rode it stock in the Fall, so I am hoping everything is still fine. I planned on some electrolysis to clean the inside of the tank this weekend along with a quick muratic acid and acetone flush. I'll see if it leaks with water before I refill it full of gas to keep it from flash rusting.

I did clean the petcock up last night while I was doing some other things in a Pinesol/Bar Keeper's Friend solution. I would like to replace the O-Rings and gasket in there, but I am not sure the part number.

Here's the before and after the cleanup

This is the whole assembly, I basically just want a rebuild kit.
