Author Topic: Need opinions - Carpy's stainless steel 4 into 1 for CB550 (Read 13087 times)

I'm pretty much set on this pipe, I love the sound, the look and the fact that it is one-piece. Seems like he has done a pretty good job replicating the old Yoshi pipes and the price is pretty decent for a stainless steel system. Does any one have any personal experience with this pipe or recommendations for similar products I should check out before hand?

I'm sure most of you are familiar with it but here's the link anyway:

For the money, you cant beat it. Get the stainless.

GP Motowerks makes a nicer one but they are currently out of stock.

I have seen a few of the GP Motowerks ones around. Looks like a really nice product as well. Is there any huge difference in the exhaust tone or the overall quality that you know of?

No experience with those, but if I had a 550, I would probably buy a set. (I have some stainless expansion chambers on order for my Water Buffalo.) The fact that you can still use the center-stand is a huge bonus.

With the Carpy set you can't use the center stand unfortunately, but that isn't an issue for me though because I removed mine.

Side note: Those old 750 2-storkes are wicked machines. My old man had an H2 decades ago and I bug him to this day about getting rid of it haha.

Carpy's 500/550 pipe has been known to be a bit long at the front and will hit the front fender under heavy braking, scary when it happens, worse if you crash from it happening. His site looks messed up. It looks as though he has raised his prices to $399 for raw steel, but if you search the Stainless one it's only $295, can't be right when the ceramic coated ones are $460.

The Water Buffalo is *very* tame compared to an H2. In the context of the early 1970s, it was a touring bike. So why would I put chambers on mine? Back in the day, a buddy had one with chambers that made an impression on me. Plus, I think that they look cool.

Probably also saved you a full 50 lbs!

I restored one of these and stupidly sold it - they are cool bikes for sure.

That is a bit disconcerning... I don't have a fender on mine and it is lowered about an inch and a half.

His site is messed up, it is really hard to navigate. From what I can tell the stainless ones are $399. I am going to have to double check now.

I have carpys black ceramic coated 4-1 on my cb550k. I bobbed the fromt fender way down- mostly to keep it in place as a fork brace. I have raised the forks about an inch in the trees to quicken handling and am running progressive suspension springs in them. I drained the fork oil to check this rumor-- completely bottoming the shocks. Even at this super Xtreme position (fork springs sticking out in the air) there is clearance. It's got a beautiful roar but after a while, well, it gets pretty dang loud- you are gonna wanna buy a nice big box of Howard light earplugs. And you are gonna want to short shift and be very judicious with the throttle late night and early mornings in quiet neighborhoods. Otherwise people WILL hate you

i dont like the psuedo "look a like"copy cat yoshi plate,and its too short,its not a true performance item,any of those copies are too short in the baffle,noise =rubbish,any #$%* can make a stylish loud exhaust.

id expect a response from carpy?im sure someone will let him know,and he will come back armed with a solid and direct reply to this post?i like those headers he has!its the muffler thats too short,no one likes noise,you want sound or performance?if you like a shallow sound go open,if you like a little more torque and "tuned"sound go with a proper muffler,this is still a straight through design,but still quiet enough,guys trying to tune pods with too short an exhaust and ride stop light to stop light havent got a chance against a stock bike!theyve just detuned their bike!if they even have the ignition sorted ?

I'll admit it, I like a nice healthy sounding engine, not open pipe loud though. You ever hear a '77 CB550 with stock exhaust? Hate it!
