Perpetually loose chain...
« on: September 03, 2005, 09:54:51 AM »
...I've had my 750F for about 6 months now. and it seems every 2 months or so, the chain is back to being slack again, and I have to readjust it.  I don't think the chain or sprokets are overly worn, however I don't know how long they have been on the bike.  I do know the chain does NOT have loose spots in it.  Is this normal?  Any info appreciated...

How many miles are two months? My chain loosens up enough to need adjustment in 300-500 miles.
If it's worth doing at all it's worth over-doing.

...I don't put alot of miles on it...I fill up the tank probably once a month.  But most of those miles are tooling around town...so I'm sure that is tougher on it...

How often do lube the chain and what type of lube are you using?
Is this an oring chain or standard?

A new chain will rear faster (certainly initially) on used sprockets as it wears in to the worn spacing of the old sprockets.

...I admit I probably havn't taken very good care of the chain.  It wasn't to bad when I got the bike, so I've only sprayed it with some PB Blaster.  How do I tell if the chain is Oring or standard?

On the standard chain, the side plates rub up against one another. On an O-ring, the side plates are separated by, well and O-ring. The tend to be somewhat wider because of this, so clearance on the front sprocket in particular can sometimes be an issue on older bikes.
