New member from Utah '71 CB500
« on: August 12, 2013, 06:10:36 PM »
Hello all!  I've had many motorcycles in the past.  The garage has recently become void of two wheeled ecstasy.  That is until three days ago.  I was looking and found a motorcycle that I liked.  It is a 1971 CB500 with a 1975 CB550E in it.  I can't figure out where the front drum brake came from.  I'm excited to learn about this bike and get her running.

Welcome! That bike is sweet. Not running?  Will need a good battery for spark and cleaned carbs if its been sitting for long.

Post some pics of the front hub, one of the guys will know. My guess is an early CB450.

Thanks!  It was running and then parked for two years.  Head gasket looks to be leaking.  The carbs will come off and the fork seals are shot.  Someone installed a Dyna ignition in place of the old set up.

Head gasket leak is pretty common, could be the "pucks", see lnk below.  I have a Dyna in my K4, run it!

Battery acid level was low.  I charged it with a trickle charger for 24 hrs (acid level back up to the normal lines), got some new gas, poured it in, it fired right up!  Took her for a spin.  I'm lucky so far.   8)

This bike is running like a champ!  I just need to fix the leaky petcock and do a carb overhaul.
