comstar rims on a 1972 CB500
« on: May 10, 2011, 09:50:14 AM »
Hey everyone, I've looked and looked but to found no info, so will a comstar rim fit right on to a '72 CB500, and /or is there any mods needed to take into consideration? I posted on here before with some pics of what I started with and ill post more soon.

If you have a dual disc brake on the front, definitely not.  Are you stripping a 650? if so the entire front end swaps over to the 500 direct fit. The rear wheel is wider than the 500 , the 650 swing arm is about an inch and a half longer than the 500 swingarm but the arch curvature is further away from the axle allowing the wider wheel an tire.
I have switched out the swing arms  before but when you use the 650 swing arm , the pivot bolt holes will  have to be drilled out to accept the larger swing arm 650 bolt. So the comstars can work on the 500 easily if you have a donor 650 for sure. ( and the 650 shocks are better than the 500's).
I don't know what mix and match works with other bikes as I have only done this mix and match. That's not the end of it though, I was also switching the 500 engine with the 650 engine... the chain size is different, I didn't have to deal with that issue so I can't direct you to a direct parts switch for sure but, it may  could be as easy as switching out the 500 drive sprocket to the 650 drive sprocket...can't say for sure.

A few Honda 500's, a few Honda 550's, a few Honda 650's, '72 cb 450, a couple 500/550/650 hybrids, and 2001 750.

Oh...hmm. another 400 or 450?
I know the wheels are slightly thinner than my 500 spokes.

What , like a cm 400 a or cm 450 c ? Do you have one as a donor? or just the wheels?

Not sure. Will ask my buddy, he sold me some spare parts...check my setup so far. 400f tank on 500f frame. I will install the comstars if I can. They are holding in place for measurement purposea but they are not centered... I may need to make new spacers??? And the 500f shaft does not fit in the comstar bore.

Can probably be made to work by making custom axle spacers, but you'll need to make sure that the front and rear wheel centerlines are the same, and then make sure the final drive is inline.  Depending on the rim, you might be looking at custom offset sprockets to fit those reverse comstars.

Ok makes sence.. Remember I am a newby, so what about the sproket, it shows 3 more teeth than the 500, anything to think about there?
Thanks again.
