"Original Honda CB750" by John Wyatt
« on: September 08, 2006, 09:02:57 AM »
My wife was surfing the 'net last week and came upon this book, the "Original Honda CB750" by John Wyatt.  Found it on amazon.uk and she bought if for me!!  This is a beautiful book, all colour plates, documents each model, beautiful book for doing restorations.  I know what she paid for it as it was published in 1998, but man what a great book. It's what I would call a coffee table book, not for the workshop as I would like to keep it pristine.

If you ever find this book for a reasonable price, pick it up.  the colour photos just make it.

I've been looking for a copy for two years. Hard to come by. Last one I saw on eBay went for $75.00 and that was about two years ago.

I want a copy of that book so bad.  I would easily pay over $75 for one.

I am in Canada also, but you don't want to see the price.  She is a good woman but holy #$*@, I would not have bought it for myself.  Here is a link
http://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/1901432130/ref=olp_product_details/702-6444874-1359230?ie=UTF8

I guess it is so expensive because it is out of print.  Christmas came early this year.

She also ordered me "Honda CB750" by Mick Duckworth. same website.

That, plus the oil cooler I ordered from Terry, kind of blows the budget.  Won't be able to buy food, just have to live on beer and motorbikes.  Could be worse, might have to give up the beer.

P.S. if Mick can get it for 20 pounds, maybe he could help you out and you guys can work out the shipping.

Mick,

I don't suppose you'd let me use your mailing address in the UK so that I could order one from WHSmith? I could then arrange to have it shipped from your place to mine.

No big deal if you're not interested.

Cheers,
Martini

Yes, that's the problem when you come too late into the game.  I wish I had started this 10 years ago, but back then I lived on the 'dark side', only dealt with DOHC 750's from 81 and 82.  I finally saw the light and came back to the original bike.  Now I have to start collecting, but it is pricier than it was 10 years ago that's for certain.  Although, I cannot imagine how anyone ever restored a bike without the internet.  Just not enough salvage shops around locally to do all the scrounging needed for all the bits that would need to be replaced.  My hat is off to the 'older' restorers (and by that I mean years spent restoring, not physical age).

On a side note, if anyone ever comes across a copy of Cafe Racers by Mike Clay (published 1988), I would love to get my hands on it.

Just a question: is it softbound or hardbound? The first ones were hardcover; there is a full series of "Original XXX" books, where XXX is CB750, Kawa Z1, Porsche 356 etc. I know there has been Porsche reissues in softcover, so probably there have been new issues on the CB750 too.

If that's the case, even if it's softcover, I would say buy it. This one and the Mick Duckworth in Haynes are the best ones IMO.

Hardcover.  Spent last night going cover to cover.  Details changes from model year to model year, covers K and F models, and even the Hondamatic.  Great book. Did I mention I really like it   ::) ?

On a side note, if anyone ever comes across a copy of Cafe Racers by Mike Clay (published 1988), I would love to get my hands on it.

your request stuck in my mind, cause i have the book.  i bought it in toronto about 15 years ago at this place:

www.transportbooks.com

i talked to them again today.  the original hardcopies go for 150-250 on the internet.  the internet talks about a later softcover edition, but they say it never happened, cause the advance orders weren't good enough.

but they suggest this might be a good alternative:

http://www.amazon.ca/Cafe-Racers-1960s-Lifestyle-Pictorial/dp/1872004199/ref=sr_11_1/702-1706418-1862455?ie=UTF8

i admire honda cause their 1970s bikes/frames were a perfect foundation for the brit bike cafe racer look.  they really knew what they were doing.  kawasaki went for the muscle bike look, but you can't beat a 1970s honda if you want to build a classic cafe racer.

OUCH!

Mine was 'as new' when I got it on Ebay.uk about a year ago.  I think won it for a little under $100 plus shipping.
