1975 550 tuning.
« on: February 17, 2014, 03:20:49 PM »
Quick question. I recently rebuilt my carbs and went through the 3000 mile tune up and things were running pretty well. I decided to pull my plugs and see how they looked and I was definitely running rich. I measured the gap on the old plugs and they were at about .025 I bought new  ngkd7es plugs and gapped them to .060.  I had a difficult time getting it started after the plug change but once it was on the road it ran better than ever. Absolutely no hesitation and pulled hard. I only ran it a few miles and noticed while idling I was getting a little smoke out of the exhaust that I never had before.
 BIke is very hard to start and if I give it any gas at all it wont start.
So I threw the old plugs back in and it fires right off, no smoke but doesn't pull as hard and the little hesitation is back.
 With the old plugs I was running about 2 turns out on the mixture screws but was getting some popping when coming off the throttle hard and had a small hesitation when getting on the throttle.  I went to one turn and the popping went away but the hesitation persists. I do have a couple of holes in my exhaust that could be causing the backfiring. Sorry for the novel. Any ideas are appreciated.

I'm no expert, but my book says to gap the plugs at .024-.028

And you would be correct. That's what I get for using  google as my service manual.
Everything is good now.

0.024" = 0.6mm
'Then' and 'than' are completely different words and have completely different meanings. Same with 'of' and 'have'. Set and sit. There, their and they're. Draw and drawer. Could care less/couldn't care less. Bought/brought FFS.

If you upgrade the ignition system to handle higher voltage coils you can do a bigger spark.

Tears up the plugs faster, but you definitely get that hard pull without the hard starting.
