There's as many registered bikes in Alaska as there is in Hawaii.  And Mississippi is behind BOTH of them  ???

Back in the early 70's when I was still working at the dealership, Michigan was the leader for bikes.

As a region, five in the top ten...not to shabby.  A scattering of western and northeast states in the top 10 also....all "winter" states...very interesting.  As for the rest of the country....what a bunch of pussies. ;D

I've theorized that folks along the coasts have boats instead of bikes.  What percentage of the population lives near the coasts?

Interesting theory.  Texas has 438K bikes and over 596K boats.

There was a time that I had two boats and no bikes but now I have 10 bikes and only 1 boat.

Five boats and three bikes.  :)

The theory is questionable.  Some coastal states have more bikes, some more boats.    In our 5 state region we have a lot of both. :)

Boats per capita Minnesota ranks 1st, followed by Wisconsin, South Carolina, Maine, and North Dakota rounding out the top five.  Minnesota leads by a large margin with over 15% of the population owning a boat and Wisconsin next at 11%.  South Dakota 10th and Iowa 12th.

In absolute numbers it's Florida, Michigan, and Minnesota.

I am concerned that these statistics do not account for folks that own more than one bike.

The numbers are from registrations and population numbers so it doesn't matter how many a person owns as long as they are titled.  Two of my boats are not currently titled but my bikes are...crap...I've skewed the numbers. ;D

In MA, one has to title vehicles. I am assumining that most states needing to increase revenue have made titling obligatory as well.

Interesting how low California is on the list.

They are basing the rank off the ratio of number of bikes to number of people.
Look at the number of bikes.

Well, I get that. It is a lot of bikes.  But California is a big state with a lot of people, many awesome roads, a very motorcycle friendly climate, yet it is way down the list. Their ratio isn't even half of what Alaska or Minnesota can muster. Which makes it interesting, to me anyway.

I think there must be a correlation between those who chose to live outside megacity states for personal space reasons and those who chose to own & ride motorcycles.

Could be, though I see a lot of bikes when I've been to L.A. and San Diego. California's enlightened attitude toward lane splitting appears to make the congestion tolerable on a bike.
