K7 Stator Issues
« on: March 02, 2014, 11:32:10 AM »
I just checked my charging system and it appears to be working, but just barely. With revs > 3000, the battery is seeing about 12.75V (from a charged 12.52).

I put a meter on the stator and saw all windings were open with respect to each other (yellow wire to yellow wire). One appears to sit at about 11 ohms with respect to chassis. Something seems off and I was curious if anyone has seen anything similar. I'd be really surprised if the stator failed; well, I'd be really surprised if someone else's stator failed.

Thanks!

Are you measuring the stator yellows in circuit or out of circuit?

Gotta ask if you are familiar with meters and how to use them.  Note: they are NOT all the same, just like motorcycles.
What are the knob/button settings and what is on the display, and where exactly are you placing the probes.
Have you checked the connection under the covers?

Has the alternator experienced physical trauma?

Know this:
If all the stator winding were all truly open, it could never generate ANY power.
If a winding was connected to the engine case, that winding could not generate any power.

Sorry, I should have been more detailed. I'm measuring the coils out of circuit on correct (lowest, sub 1k) range of known-good meter.

I haven't taken the covers off yet; I planned to give it a bit more thought before draining oil. I suppose I'll pop them off and reevaluate.

Just an update:
All is fine -- white wires may look yellow after 40 years.
