What Was The First Honda That Got YOUR Attention?
« on: February 21, 2014, 10:02:47 PM »

Wasn't sure if this was the right place to put this or not. But, here goes. The very 1st Honda I ever saw and REALLY got my attention was the Benly 125 Super Sports. I don't remember the exact model designator, but Sam and some others know of it.

Our family went to different Motorcycle Races in the State, now and then. On this occasion,  we had gone to New Port Arkansas and they had an asphalt track there. As we approached a high banked turn of the track and I heard what sounded like a well tuned sports car making laps. Imagine my surprise when we came up over the rise and there was this slightly small motorcycle making those laps. He spun out and killed the engine. He got up, grabbed the Benly and as he jumped on it, suddenly it was running and off he went! I was suddenly introduced to a motorcycle with an Electric Starter and as he wound through the gears, those megaphone mufflers sounded BEAUTIFUL!!!!!! That was my 1st reaction to a Honda and the CB77 305 Super Hawk was the 2nd and the CB750K0 was right Up There, just a little later on, that's all.  8)

XR75 dirt bike. Never owned one (I had the Yamy YZ80C), but a mate had one. Like all Honda, beautiful build quality & I just loved that big dirty curved muffler up the side.

I started on a ct 70, and loved it. But the one that really got my attention was a
blue and white SL 350 k1. A high school guy in an adjacent neighborhood owned it.
That thing would climb anything, and rocket away in a giant rooster tail. If you stood ten feet behind it, and he blipped the throttle hard enough, the exhaust pulses would hit you in the face. At 14 years old, that was wishful thinking. Eventually I heard, that it died from abuse.

Good question Bill.  Not sure of the model but they were little step thru Hondas that were rentals. Back in the early to mid 60s when Honda was beginning to market in the US a bunch of "dealers" popped up where one could rent a little Honda for something like ten to fifteen bucks.  It was the start of the YOU MEET THE NICEST PEOPLE ON A HONDA CAMPAIGN.  Over 50 years ago so the recollection is foggy at best.  My first Honda was  gorgeous early CB350 that was candy red and white...Larry

2 of my older bros both had H2 Kaws and my oldest bro took a Kaw 2 stroke 250 twin to Bonneville so as a young teen I thought Kaws were the coolest bikes around and I never paid much attention to anything else that is until the CBX came out. I was a freshman maybe sophomore in HS at the time when the CBX came out and all us guys in HS thought it was the baddest bike ever.

There was a Honda rental a block
From my house that had a big
Field out front. At 12 yrs. old I
could rent a Cub for $5 per half
Hour! I spent most of my lawn
Mowing money there!!

The first Honda that I was aware of was an early Superhawk. I grew up in a very small community and knew the family of the guy that owned it. He even gave me a ride on it. Of course at my age any motorcycle had a WOW factor.

But the first that really drew me in was a photo in Cycle World of a CL77. I looked at that photo every day, even took the mag to school and showed everyone. It wasn't too long after that I had saved enough to buy a new CL 77 and that's where my Honda journey started.

The mid-'80's 750 Nighthawks.
And, of course, the CB1300's that we don't get to buy in the States!

1st. ride was on a 58 H-D Sportster as a 10 year old.  That got my interest going.  First Honda was a pair of 64 CB77 Superhawks.  One belonged to my cousin the other belonged to a high school friend who actually showed me how to ride after I got my license in 1966.   Never lost interest.  I still have my dad's 66 Superhawk.

Hey, lots of interesting posts going here. That's cool. My 1st bike was a Jawa 50cc that was supposed to look like a moped without pedals, but my Dad took it apart, reworked the fram and put it back together to look like a small "Motorcycle". Then, my 1st "Streetable" motorcycle was a 125cc Jawa that my Dad sent me upstairs in my Granddad's Motorcycle Shop, to get it and that was when I found out that I had to put it together from PARTS! The wheels were the only things I didn't have to assemble! At 1st, I could not visualize a motorcycle coming from all those parts, but it did. But, my 1st Honda was a '66 CB72 250cc Hawk (Always LOVED the 305 Super Hawk, but couldn't find one that I could make a deal on). Boughjt that bike, when I was stationed at Misawa AFB in Japan in 1968 (Paid a whopping $250.00).

1969 CT-70.  A neighbor family got one and a Z-50 for Christmas that year.  I was in the 6th grade.

That Benly would have been a CB92. It may be now one of the most sought after Hondas after the Sandcast.

My mate's older brother had a BSA Bantam and occasionally would give me a lift on the back of it on the way home from school. No real suspension and it was a boneshaker over the mile of corrugated dirt road that was my street. Then one day he came by with a beautiful blue Honda C72 Dream. Riding on the back of that was heaven compared to the Bantam. This would have been about 1963/64. Not long after, his brother, my aforementioned mate, bought a CB72. That was the second Honda I ever rode on. It was a flyer compared to the Dream.

What year were those Jawas?

The Jawa 50 is about a 1958 or so and I think it was called a "Scooterette", though I have seen one I think was called a Pioonere , I believe. When I get the chance, I will try to find a picture online of what it looked like, before my Dad modified it. I don't know of where any pictures of it, right off and it is disassembled now. The Jawa 125 was assembled of parts that were at my Granddad's shop and we titled it as a 1958. It was one of those single cylinder Jawas that had 2 exhaust ports and 2 complete exhaust systems. Sounds like you have some knowledge or at least some interest in the old Jawas.

HJave to say that, when I was in Northern Japan, in the U.S.A.F., I saw a Honda convertible, an S something, I think and it was like a small MG Midget, in looks. I actually tried to do a trade with my Honda CB72, but couldn't make a deal.  That was a pretty slick looking ride too!
