Coil Identification?
« on: February 22, 2014, 09:28:02 AM »
I just picked up a new(to me) 750 to fix up. Trying to get the thing running but these coils arent stock and I'm wondering if anyones seen them before? Cant find any info on the units themselves. The guy I got it off of gave me extra parts off a newer Cb and im hoping these aren't the CDI coils off that bike. Thanks fellows.

I can not tell from the photo but you should be able to ring them out with a ohm meter. I would have to look up the readings you should have. I know you should have 5 ohms on one side but I forget the other side. It will be in the FAQ or in the service manual. I will help you out more if someone else does not.

My hunch is they are cdi units. I found a CDI igniter in the random parts i had.  Wish i didnt throw that in the trash. Those things are selling for $50+.

If you will need coils keep in mind that the Honda coils have non removable plug wires but you can get after market ones that have removable wires. This is if you want color choice. You want 5 ohm coils.

Take a resistance measurement of the primary and secondary of each coil.  Stock coils are close to 5 ohms on the primary and around 15000Ω on the secondary.

Points will still work if the primaries are 3 ohms or less, but the lower the resistance, the faster the points will burn up, requiring frequent maintenance attention.

True CDI coils are very very low resistance.  Some newer Hondas had transistor ignition rather than true CDI.

I went ahead and pulled them out. I had an extra set of stock coils laying around but I tested them out and they were shot. Just going to go with another set of Dyna 5ohms.
