Blue pipes on 400F
« on: February 24, 2014, 04:06:18 PM »
Hi Guys. I'm new to the forum and am reliving a bit of my childhood by purchasing two 1975 CB400F's. One is a 2,100 mile "display piece". My concern however is the blued pipes. That would seem to indicate a lean burn situation. Can anyone point me in the right direction- ie. don't ride it until you.....
The second 400 I purchased is a 20K mile "fixer upper" that I'm sure I'll be on the forum about.
Thank you in advance for any help you can provide!

Welcome Rich.  Yes, it can be an indication of a lean condition.  A 3k tune up & carb sync would probably be advised, check the plugs & carbs (for jet size, clip position, etc) vs stock.  Are the headers/pipes/muffs  original?  Honda used mostly double wall headers, so it's not as common to blue as easily as some aftermarket stuff (or golden like stainless does) or like Brit bikes do.

Once they are blue they stay blue.   :(

Thanks for the reply guys. This bike is supposed to be bone stock (and it looks to be- even the tires). I was advised to maybe try some Yamalube carb cleaner in case the jets have some clogging. Suggestions? Also, I understand that there's no way to improve the blue color short of a re-chrome. That's a shame since the bike is otherwise perfect.

Blue-away works very well on
discolored pipes. I have used
it for years.
