My occupations
« on: September 08, 2006, 06:33:57 PM »
Some one a while back started or tried to start a thread on
"Wuts yer job"?

After the joys of my job today I'll tell you what mine is.
I'm a logger, besides logging full time, I'm a horseman,
which means I'm a grass farmer too!

Anyway, over the last 3 weeks here is what a loggers life is like.
Building a road in the mountain a hydraulic line blew on the backhoe,
fixed that, built the road.
A couple of blown outside tires on the log truck because unsettled rocks
eat side walls.

Rung off a drive shaft on the skidder, it seems a hydraulic line had settled down
in the belly pan to rub on the drive shaft, rubbed it in two,
Winched died last week, drum bearing blew up and necessitated a rebuild of the wench.
AND today, the son backed it down the mountain to the trees I'd just cut,
started out and I looked up and he was rolling it back down breaking it
till he got it back against a tree, it had lost all pulling power.
Went back to the shop and got the come-a-long and we pulled the transmission
with the forward reverse box back and the clutch had blown up.
80 miles one way to the parts supplier and back, we had it back in at dark and
made the drag by moonlight.
(I fixed a lot of other stuff in the last 3 weeks but I've lost track of time)

Ok, that is the life of a logger (the safe part).

Anyone want to be a logger cause misery loves company.

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Tell me bout it!  The worst thing that happens in my day at work is a spring breaks on the cheese board and the scale runs out of labels at the same time! :o

If Colorado liquor laws weren't so messed up I'd be selling beer and wine too. :'(

Hello,
I am an plastic injection molder by trade. I mold a lot of the plastic interior pieces in the domestic cars that people drive around today. Some days and weeks are hectic like Rocking-M's. I deal with large pieces of machinery and as machines will do, they break down at the most inopportune times. The machinery that I use has a clamping force anywhere from 25 tons psi to 3000 tons psi, then you have the robotics that all have to be programed , and  various supporting pieces of equipment. The opportunities for problems are almost limitless. On top of all that I also have to deal with the "human" factor, which is more troublesome than any machine at times.
I do not know about anyone else, but I would not trade what I do for any other type of job. My job brings instant results, or misfortune right away. I do not have to wait several days or weeks to see the fruits of my labors. I get a lot of satisfaction from looking at a car and knowing that I probably was involved int the making of several pieces of the interior of that car. My boss says that what we do is a team effort, and to some degree it is, but when it comes right down to it the molding technician is the "one" who can make or break you. Good molding technicians are like gold in my world. Companies often will "recruit"(steal) good molding technicians away from other companies.
Sorry for carrying on like I did, but I dig what I do for a living.

After 32 years in the optical biz, starting as an apprentice dispensing optician and ending as an in-office trainer for staff in optometrists offices, I decided on a career change. I had been a motorcycle riding instructor on the side for seven years and decided to become a full time driver examiner, which is where I am now.

that's a sweet dentist joke! got any more??

...here...i'll start:

A businessman was in Japan to make a presentation to the Toyota motor people. Needless to say, this was an especially important deal, and it was imperative that he make the best possible impression. On the morning of the presentation he awoke to find himself passing gas, in large volumes, with the unpleasant characteristic of sounding like "HONDA." The man was besides himself. Every few minutes "HONDA", "HONDA".... Unable to stop this aberrant behavior, and in desperate need to terminate these odious and rather embarrassing emissions, he sought a physicians aid. After a full examination, the doctor told him that there was nothing inherently wrong with him and that he would just have to wait it out. Being unwilling to accept this state of affairs he visited a second and then a third doctor all of whom told him the same thing. Finally one medic suggested that he visit a dentist. Well although he could not see how a dentist was going to be of any help, he visited one anyway. Lo and behold, the dentist said, "Ah, there's the problem" "What is it?" the man asked. "Why you have an abscess," said the dentist. "An abscess. How could that be causing my problem?" asked the man. "That's easy," replied the dentist. "Why everyone knows... Abscess makes the fart go Honda."

Well some days it seems like I am pulling teeth, but it does not pay as well. I work for a Rail Road Car builder. I do training for Transit workers. I spend a lot of time in Rail Yards and repair facilities. I retired from a hi tech company and I really needed a change. It sounds like a fluff gig, but working around moving Trains and inside shops with heavy objects moving around, and of course high voltages. No, you cannot get killed by peeing on the 3rd rail, but we all avoid it.

Man, everyone's job sounds much cooler/more exciting than mine.

I am a configuration manager for a big computer mainframe, software solutions, and software tools company.  A configuration manager is not a "supervisior" kinda manager- it literally means I manage configuration of SW code, documents, change control records, etc.  It is about as exciting as watching paint dry.  I also do SW compiles/builds and deployments- that's when you take a bazillion little boring programs, and you produce a few big boring programs that can be installed on a mainframe or network.  Sometimes when I am extra lucky, I get stuck doing daily builds and compiles, and I get to put in 70-80 hour weeks, yet I am fortunate in that I don't get paid overtime!  Hurray!

I guess I shouldn't complain- I'm able to pay my bills, and things are pretty stable.  But, honest to goodness, I daydream about getting a job at Home Depot.  My job is very very much like office space.

Home Depot.... thats funny

I work at Office Depot right now selling office supplies.  When you come up to the register to buy a printer, Im the guy that tries to pressure you into buying the extra warranty.

Thats really just a cover for my parents though.  I make all my money doing other stuff but If I didnt have that job they would bother me constantly about getting one.  They just dont understand that I can make as much money as I do buying broken things, fixing them and reselling them; amps, CD players, motorcycles....
That was the original plan for my CB650 but then I fell in love with it and just cant bring myself to sell it after I put so much work into it.

Oh Yeah... I forgot to mention that Im going to college as well.

Rose Hulman Institute of Technology!  It's a small engineering school in Middle of Nowhere, Indiana but its supposedly really good.  Im studying mechanical engineering so I can keep doing the kind of work I love, just as a real job instead of a hobby. ;D

Racing33- I know exactly what you mean. I work for a plastic raw materials supplier and frequently visit molding shops for tech support. Being in the automotive business makes for no shortage of headaches.  :P

Personnel here... hiring and all the bs associated with people.  Honestly, I prefer working the motorcycle (at least when I do something good for it, it "acts" like it appreciates my efforts....

Seriously, it's the best and worst all in one package.  I see folks at their absolute best and at their absolute worst.  Never much in between.

I'm humbled by all you guys. Seems like a like a lot of education out there. I'm just a dumb ass mechanic. Got "hooked" on it
in 1975,  after successfully doing a top end rebuild on a 750 k4, armed with no more than a clymer and a small set for Craftsman
tools. (dealer said it needed a valve job, I discovered a disconneceted choke flap on number 1, AFTER doing the valve job) Thought I was Superman. I was 17. Notice what it says underneath my avatar...
