Another rearsets thread. Chopping brake spindle.
« on: February 18, 2014, 07:27:45 PM »
I'm trying to fit rearsets. I have a CB750K4. I have cut off my passenger peg mounts.

So, my problem is on my brake side. In order to fit my rearsets so that I'm not bending 45 degrees at the waist or doing the superman, I need to space them out from the frame. Otherwise, my toe will make contact with the rear brake spindle.

<a href="http://s1313.photobucket.com/user/darylstewart/media/BBF3BF82-A05A-45ED-93B8-4E2B750310CE_zpsq7gqfwmq.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1313.photobucket.com/albums/t556/darylstewart/BBF3BF82-A05A-45ED-93B8-4E2B750310CE_zpsq7gqfwmq.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo BBF3BF82-A05A-45ED-93B8-4E2B750310CE_zpsq7gqfwmq.jpg"/>[/url]

As you can see, I've had an ugly piece of angle welded to my frame. My plan was to machine a 1/2" plate of aluminum, mount my rearsets to the plate and mount the rearsets to the angle. However, I will need to space my controls out an entire inch to barely clear the brake spindle.

Is it safe to shorten the brake spindle?

Yeah you could shorten the spindle, it won't compromise strength from a safety point. It is already a pretty beefy piece for the use. The only thing is you will have to fix up the splines afterwards, little file work is all.

If I were you I would space the spindle inward using a nice collar, what about something from the plumbing department, thin wall piece of tubing. No lateral forces on it so it would have to be beefy. It would also space the spindle inward without surgery

Yeah, I believe that most things on this bike were overbuilt. I could use a collar, but I think I might do as the other fellow suggests and cut it and reweld it from the inside.

Shorten it from the back side, not the spline side. Where the reversing plate connects to the spline shaft, cut off the arm, shorten the shaft, then weld the plate/arm back on. That should pull the splines into the frame just enough to provide the clearance you seek.

Alternatively, you may need the cut the collar of the brake arm where it mounts onto the splines to shorten the amount of seating depth.

A wise idea, I think this will be my plan.

I was already planning on thinning the splined clamp for the brake lever. See, basically I am cutting the lever where it meets the clamp and welding on a mount for the linkage. The collar would be a lot wider than the linkage mount, so I planned on shaving the collar down on both sides. Could probably save an inch!

What are the chances of me destroying the splines on the collar? How difficult would it be for a machinist to produce a clamp with matching splines?

Maybe if I force the spline through from the good side after cutting?

Get Tarozzi part# 01-0016SA.  Cut the spindle right in the middle where the groove is.  Attach 01-0016SA and you should be good to go.

Thanks Scott, I was just checking those out. Definitely going to chop to spindle at the space between the splines.  I asked my machinist friend if he could make the brake arm and he can, so I'll probably follow him up on that. Plus, I might get him to make me a matching arm for the shift side.

Thanks for the help guys. I love how I overcome one issue only to encounter another.

If you had put a collar, or any way moved the shaft towards the inside, the brake actuating rod would probaly have clearance issues. Not to mention an odd operating angle.
'Then' and 'than' are completely different words and have completely different meanings. Same with 'of' and 'have'. Set and sit. There, their and they're. Draw and drawer. Could care less/couldn't care less. Bought/brought FFS.

Yeah, I figure I'd be asking for another problem.

Well, this was easier than I thought. Chopped both sides with no issues. Used a good hack saw.

I'll give an update once I get my mounting plates back from my machinist.
