1972 Triumph Tiger 650 opinions ???
« on: February 24, 2014, 01:39:10 PM »
Ok fellas - got a buddy with a 72 Triumph 650 Tiger for sale.    Single downtube frame, 1 carb.  Frame and motor numbers match - clean TX title.

To me, it looks very original with some incredble patina.  The Patina on the tanks and fenders look just awesome.

Original pipes, bolts, seat etc. etc.   Has 7000 miles on the clocks, which to me seems believeable after looking over the bike.

The only thing that seems to be missing are the turn signals - wiring harness intact - uncut.

It has been stored outside under a roof and side cover for the last 2-3 years (wtih gas in the tank & carbs) so it will not run.  The fuel tank had a liner
which has failed in an epic fashion and you can see the rust in the tank.   It will be a very tedious task to get the liner and rust out of that tank without
ruining the paint.  However, he does have a replacement tank for it.   But - I'll be honest, the patina of tis bike is the reason that I want it.

Of course it leaks oil and is a bit greasy/dirty, but I think it would run after the carbs are clean, tank is cleaned and a little general maintenance.

Price ????     If it were a 1972 Honda CB750 in the exact same condition (good original pipes seat etc - complete) I think I'd easily get 4,000 or more.

What do these Triumphs go for in those English bike circles ?     To me, it seems like many of the parts for that model are reproduced and look like they are cheaper than comparable Honda parts.

Any opinions or websites I could look toward ?      I have the advantage of knowing what he paid for the cycle about 3 years ago ($3500) and I think he overpaid.    I'm thinking that Triumph guys would probably try to get it for $3000 or less ?     I'd actually feel good with anything under $3000 because the patina is really outstanding.

Are these 650 Tigers the CB650 of their line ?

Any opintions, greatly appreciated.

Early '70's Triumph, the Cb650 analogy is probably not too far off. Based on the condition you describe I would agree that today it isn't worth what he paid for it. On the plus side there is great aftermarket support for parts. I'd go in at $2,500.
