can these carbs be used...or saved?
« on: February 24, 2014, 01:37:03 PM »
Okay guys,

These carbs are 627Bs from a '71 CB500. They were terribly stuck but with the advice I got here -thanks again- I got the float pins , slides, and all the other parts out. Decided to have them soda blasted. Unfortunately, the blasting revealed that my first impression was wrong, there was significant though localized corrosion, pretty well confined to two pin stanchions. One each on two carbs. Pictures attached for your assessment.

That should be ok.  When you soda blast it won't take away metal, but with very weak metal with corrosion, it's a good idea to be real mindful of your settings, pressure, duration of exposure.

Sometimes if I suspect that there is underlying damage, I will tape off the emulsion holder and posts and clean them by hand if necessary.

Of note the CB750 carbs seem to have the least problems with pitting, PD carbs perhaps better than older style.  Cb500/cb550, on par or less.  And cb350f, and cb400f I suspect the alloy is slightly different and also everything is smaller, so any pitting will be a larger percentage of the total mass.

So be careful with those baby carbs.

Thanks to you both. I will reassemble the carbs and use them.
