Fitting a muffler - CB550F 4 into 1
« on: February 25, 2014, 03:46:11 PM »
Ordered a 17" reverse cone muffler from Dime City and am having some trouble installing. The front end of the muffler is smaller than the 4 into 1 mounting spot on the original exhaust. The kit came with three sleeves but I believe those would be used if the muffler was too large rather than too small. Any ideas? I do have access to a welder and could fab something but was gonna see if any of you guys have had luck installing these in a simpler way.

Cheers
Ty

I did that exact thing. I have a 77 CB550f and installed an aftermarket muffler. I went to an auto parts store that sold exhaust adapters and found one that would slide over the header and into the muffler. The only concern is that the adapter is not chrome, but I sprayed it with silver high heat paint and it looks good.

Thanks y'all. Gonna hit the auto parts store and see about buying an adapter to weld on.

My muffler was smaller than the diameter at the end of my 4 into 1 too- I got a piece of 2 1/4 inch pipe with a 5 degree bend in it from the muffler shop - I rammed the muffler into this pipe and welded it on, then I welded it straight to the end of my 4 into 1.
I am considering braising over the welds and smoothing then polishing the brass so the oxy welded joints can't rust.
