Which and Why: Yoshi Replica Exhaust for CB550

I see that Carpy is now selling a stainless version of the Yoshi replica pipe.  That said, I am debating between either Carpy's pipe or Chris's pipe from MotoGP Werks.  The Lossa pipe is also a contender but is not offered in stainless.  Carpy states that his are ready to ship whereas Chris waits until he has enough orders to warrant a production run.  Only a nominal difference in price btw Carpy and Chris but wanted to know if there are other factors (baffle/weld/other) that would help me make a final determination.  Thanks in Advance.

There was another thread on this recently (too tired to look for it).   I also considered buying the ss MotoGP pipe and a link was posted showing only one left.  I hesitated and it was gone a few hours later. 

One of the guys posted that the Carpy pipe has sloppy welds. 

I'd vote for the a MotoGP pipe if you can wait.

Yes, I read the threads prior to authoring anew.  You never know if someone is simply trying to snipe the competition nowadays.  Simply looking for fresh input as Chris at MotoGP Werks relayed to me last week that he is going to make another run of them as early as this Friday and to reconfirm my intent prior to this date.  Having just returned from Afghanistan, I am flush with cash and ubber anxious to again work on my "therapy bike".

If I were a manufacturer and demand for my product was high,  I would do every thing I could to increase production.  Of course, this is not the way to create hype on ones product.

I've got Chris' system and could not be more impressed with it. Sounds great, runs grat, and the fabrication quality is top notch.

In fact, I just emailed him last night for another system for my 500 build.

Gold: I asked him last fall why the limited runs and his reply was that he doesn't make enough profit in the units to warrant volume production. Since we "DIY-ers" tend to be a cheap lot, he can't re ally charge what he'd like to make it worthwhile as his primary business appears to be service-oriented.

That said, I'd still recommend his product most highly and will be a repeat customer myself.

I got one from Chris last year, still isn't on my bike so cant do too much as far as sound goes, I went and picked it up from him, good guy even threw in a heat shield for the carbs. I was really impressed with the shop and the bikes in there.

The pipe is super nice, it is so well made and I think it is made by Chris, at least that is the impression that I got. He told me the same thing about not making much out of each pipe. It make sense when you think about the cost of stainless and the amount of labour in them, that is if you are paying a proper fabricator.

You need to hear the sound out of these.

I had a similar thread. Seems that the concensus was that the MotoGP pipe was a little better quality overall. For me, I don't care if the welds are perfect looking as long as they hold. The availability of Carpy's pipe basically made it my choice. Plus, you can get one of the stainless steel pipes with ceramic coating for $460.00 right now.

I purchased the MotoGPWerks pipe last summer and love it.  Install (and removal) in just a few minutes, really clean and love the sound.  My only complaint was the machined adapters that bolt onto the head seemed like they were either sprayed with a cheap paint or coating which flaked off quick.  I had them ceramic coated when I had everything else powdercoated and picking them up tomorrow.

All in all I would definitely buy Chris' pipe again, it's a quality piece and looks fantastic.  I can't post a video with my iPhone so I'll try later on the computer.

Wow!!  That MotoGP sounds suuuweeeet!!!  Would love to have one of those on my K1 instead of the 4-2 Kook's.

I had something set wrong in the video clip settings -- it plays now.

Anyone have experience with the LOSSA Engineering version of the Yoshi exhaust? I've got this MAC style 4 into 1 but gives me access to the oil filter unlike the LOSSA. I was wondering if anyone sells the YOSHI tail/muffler end only? I'd like to see a version that has access to the oil filter..

Just google'd and found his shop link: http://www.ripplerockracers.com/product/hindle-mufflers-2/ He's got some pretty cool mufflers I may just  work into my existing setup. Thanks for the info.

Then look at Ripple Rock's Hindle system. It's not a Yoshi tip, but appears to be well made and answers 2 out of 3 of your requirements.

I have two carpy pipes and a moto gp werks pipe. I prefer the moto gp pipe in terms of fit and finish if that counts for anything.

Lossa will make a stainless pipe, upon request.  Jay just doesn't get many requests for them, as people want the cheaper option. 

I still think the MotoGP pipe is the highest quality 4-1.

At one point in time, all three were made by the same manufacturer but just to different specifications. 

To this day, the MGP pipe seems to have the most refined design.  That said, there have been some fitment issues reported here and there, but most are pretty damn satisfied with it.  I have one on my 750 and (initially) one flange had to be adjusted to address an exhaust leak but it works fine now and sounds even better.

Exactly. Chris {motogpwerks} now build all their pipes in house, have done for a while, Chris was an engineer for Yoshimura { he has a huge resume including working for John Britten}, and knows his stuff, he's brash and some people just don't get along with him. I've dealt with Chris for over 5 years now and he's gone out of his way to help me out, I will buy his parts again no worries at all.. ;)

I would tend to agree with you except in my case.  My 4-1 was installed by Chris (and it was the bike he used for development of his version of the 4-1) and it had an exhaust leak needing some adjustment from his fabricator.  It was not a major hiccup but one solved in about 30 seconds.  What I am trying to say is that it was not user error, but early manufacturing issues.  That said, I think all of the current production of pipes do NOT have these issues -- the kinks of production got worked out.

I would say that being fair, what you describe was part of the development of the pipe, it was the first wasn't it...?   ;)
