Topic: worn black pad just in front of drive sprocket - is this an issue?

Finally back to doing a little work on this '75 CB550 project.   Please see the picture below.   Is it an issue that this pad is worn and if so, what is involved in replacing it?  I already have purchased new chain (not "O" or "X" ring type) and both sprockets.



I also noted that the green wire (not very sharp image) has been frayed as if it was rubbing on the chain.   I will open another thread on that topic so just trying to understand this worn black pad here.

What type of chain did you remove ? Hopefully an o-ring and if not check for worn parts like swingarm bushings, alignment etc. Bike in your sig looks pretty nice and stock--------

Is that ground metal on the shift rod? Is it from some scraping on inside of the cover?
If the copper looks fresh after cleaning the green neutral switch wire you could seal it with liquid tape or equaliv. .
  I have found paint thinner or turpentine cut right through the chain oil making cleanup a breeze, Sometimes, depending on the brake cleaner , some brake cleaners will peel the paint were splashed so I don't use that. Thought I might mention that if you were planning on a little cleanup there.

Great thanks for the help.  Will check alignment when it goes back together.   No not ground metal, just dust from the shop and bad lighting.

When the sprocket teeth are worn and there is a little slack in the chain, the chain climbs up on the teeth when you decelerate. So, if the chain was a wide one, like an O-ring or X-ring type, it will find that little plug mighty tasty.

It looks like your oil seal on the shifter shaft is starting to weep, too? It's easy to change, once the grit is all cleaned out of the area. When they get old and stiff, they can't wiggle up & down when you shift (as the rod goes several directions, not just around).

It was the front sprocket worn and wobbling that caused the problem.

New front sprocket and other new parts will make the difference.

loop your wire around the other way. put a small heat shrink wrap or liquid tape like previously mentioned

Great, thanks for all the advice.   Beginning to rebuild this coming weekend, so will get this straightened out then.
