A good use for polar vortex weather
« on: January 12, 2014, 12:01:57 AM »
Got dents in your tank(s)?  Fill them with water and let them freeze-make sure it's a  hard freeze or plug it well and put it in a freezer.

I didn't take before or after pics yet, but someone from a Harley shop gave me this tip, and it is better than trying to poke something in the filler  and banging it around. I just emptied one last night after a good couple nights of single digit lows, and it popped out most of the dent and loosened the cruddy paint it had on the dent area. It will pop off the excess bondo, too. I'll  take a pic to post of the 400f tank I just did, and maybe do another , but it for now  looks like warm westerly for the next 10 days.

There have been reports that this method also pops seams. Is your tank still holding gas OK?

No gas in it yet, but the water stayed in it just  when it melted. I might freeze it again so I can have a block of ice in it when I tap out the high spots.

I've got another tank that seems to have been in a pitch pole type accident and it already leaks near the head tube. The  sides are only slightly  wavy, but it took taking it off to realize the whole tank had been shortened a bit. Might try it next since it is a wall hanger for the time being.

I have also heard about seams leaking. It sounds doable if you keep a close eye on things. Let us know how it turns out.

There was a diagonal dent from top to bottom along the side almost an inch deep. Most of it popped back out.

I think I need to check the white balance on the camera.

Seams look good, no problems.

I put a crinked 450 tank out last night, and there are more teens or lower  predicted tonight so I put out a couple more tanks filled with water.

I've  got high hopes for this one. It was Kremed because of the crinkle around the head tube leaked. Kreme didn't help.

It shortened the tank so the sides are wavy without being smacked. The paint looks okay, and probably wasn't rusty when they Kremed it.

The force pushed the tunnel back and bent it near the seat.

This one came on a chopper. It made it 40 years as a clean tank without major dents, and then the P.O. dropped it on a rail oif a trailer a month or two before I got it. Maybe it will pop out a bit, but nothing so far. Tonight it  if it freezes it harder maybe it will expand some more.

This is a tank I got at swap meet, all the bare metal had about 3/8 or more bondo that popped off. Some on the other side looks like it might come loose so more freezing for  tonight.

No problem with seams yet at all.

Get ready for this next one. 8 degrees and dropping after sleet most of the day with embedded thunder-sleet.  Flashes and thunder a good part of the day, changed to snow.

Get ready for it because it's as bad as any this winter here for cold.

I put tanks out again to see if they will push out a little more.
