Hello from Barrie, Ontario, Canada!!!
« on: August 15, 2014, 04:09:06 AM »
Hello and greetings from Barrie.

Just picked up a VERY reasonably priced 1974 CB550. By reasonably priced I mean free! It didn't run and scared the stuffing out of the PO when gas started gushing out of the carb vents.
A session on the battery conditioner and  freeing up the clogged carbs - she started right up.
She`ll need a fuse, a rear turn lamp and some minor bibs and bobs.
Only worry is she`s dripping oil (very slowly, 1 drop /2 minutes when hot) from the oil filter cover. I suspect O rings or the seal. We'll see.
I've already availed myself of the vast amount of material and knowledge on this site.
If the leak is more than what I suspect, I'm sure I'll find the answer here!

"E" for effort, calj737!

Looks like you were on the money ref the bolts...

The drain plug was almost welded in place. Had to take the torch to it to free it up.

There seems to be some confusion (at least here in Canada) regarding the filter element, seal and O-Ring. According to K&N's website (US) the correct part number is KN-401, which includes all parts.
These things are only available online!
Any Canucks out there that can point me towards a brick and mortar retailer so I can pick one up? Alternatively, any other part numbers that work in my bike? (Btw I tried the K&N cross ref and didn't have any luck  :()
Many thanks!

Update
//Got the filter bolt out. Looks like the O Ring (small one) had a chunk missing. Replaced it. Now leaking a drop per 4-5 hours from main seal. Seal itself is flat for about 1/16". I suspect this is where the leak is coming from. When I finally  ::) get the appropriate filter replacement kit, that'll be a done deal!//
