Hello all! 1971? cb750
« on: March 01, 2014, 11:23:20 AM »
Just thought I would get my first post out of the way.  I recently purchased a Honda CB750.  Not positive on the year as the frame says 70 but the title says 71.  I have had to replace a few small things so far that have thrown me off.  Main thing being the throttle cable which is the old 4 to 1 cable.  Most places I read say this is for the 1969-70 models only.  I will be starting my own thread on here to document my work.  First post will come tonight please follow along!  I joined this forum specifically to pick everyones brain and hear suggestions so the more the merrier!  I am a college senior at Wright State here in Dayton, Ohio and will be graduating in may.  Hoping this motorcycle sparks a hobby that I can spend my free time on now that I no longer have school for the first time in my life.  Hello all! And if anyone has any advice on how to tell which year it is please let me know! Thanks in advance.

Welcomes moses...you certainly came to the right place. The guys here like nothing more than to share advise and sometimes parts too. A wealth of knowledge on these vintage bikes here. Your 4 - 1 carb cable system tells us it is a 1970 CB750KO. The serial and engine number will tell us more info. Probably was built in 1970 and titled in 1971. My KO I am working on now has a build date on the steering neck sticker of 10/69, but it was not titled until 1970 so the title says it is a 1970. Probably the same thing you have there. Looking forward to your history on the bike, how you found it, miles, condition, hopefully she turns over by the kicker and is not froze, and hopefully you got the title. You will learn the most difficult and expensive parts to find is the OEM 4 into 4 exhaust. Honda just recently stopped making them, but they are out there. Or you can use a different exhaust set up too. Does not have to be OEM unless you are after a complete restore. There is a service manual on this site which you may want to download or find a paper copy on eBay. One thing the guys really enjoy here is pictures, but you have to have at least 5 posts to be able to do that. Again welcome...and congrats on your find there.

Welcome!

You can check your VIN against this table:

http://www.hondachopper.com/engine/engine_timeline/timeline.html

I have  K0 with the 4-1 cable too.  When I got it, I had to cut old cables to take carburetors apart, but the aftermarket works for me well for 3 years now.

Thanks everyone!  Just an update I have rebuilt/ cleaned the carbs up nice, replaced the old throttle cable (broken) with a used one off of ebay and it works great. After a tune up and a few kicks i got to hear it roar! It sounded like junk though so I have a little work to do.  Now I plan on fine tuning.  I really need to figure out the airbox... the one I have is cracked pretty bad but it is the original smooth side box.  Any suggestions?  I have been told to take it to a body guy but I don't know any. I will be starting a post to track progress shortly, I have been very busy with my last semester of school.

Great to hear you got it running. Yes, the fine tuning will smooth it out. Post up some pics of the air box so we can see how bad it is. If you are running it without the air box that could be a cause of the rough running too.

I have tried a couple times to upload pictures but the post wont show up for some reason?  My friend has suggested melting it back together with a soldering iron (plastic weld?).  Is this a good or bad idea? And any suggestions on why I cant post pictures?

I also was gifted a set of K&N air pods to try and use but I hear you have to adjust the carbs accordingly... any thoughts?  I figured might as well try them since my box is cracked and they have to be better than nothing.

That air box looks pretty beat up, personally I'd be looking for another.

The bike looks good but not a fan of the seat or that 16" rear wheel (stock was 18")

Yeah I am not a fan of the seat.  I was going to try and find a stock one that wasn't too expensive.  I also just noticed the triple tree is broke in two spots so that will need replaced.  How much would one expect to pay for one of those?  I also need a center stand...

I was really worried about making sure it would start first.  Now that I have confirmed it will run I am ready to move forward.  Will probably be starting a post thread in the project section soon.

Thank you!  I sent him a pm.  What is a decent price on a triple tree?  I found one for $100 wasn't sure if that was high, low, or just right.

If it's the "unicorn" style, $100 is a fair price.  FYI - the early triples had D washers as spacers, if tightened without em, the triple would crack, pretty common.

Here is a broken one you don't want as an example....

Salt... where can I view these items?

Steve-o it is a unicorn I have messaged the seller and hope to get that as well.  The one I have resembles the one in the ebay link. It is broken in the same spot on both side.  Im guessing trash it?  Or i it worth trying to repair and sell for peanuts?

It is not recommended to repair and use.

I can't understand why people try to sell those broken upper triples. I guess they figure they will be OK welded up and have no regard for human life if it didn't hold up (I sure as hell wouldn't trust it). The unicorn triple is rare and usually command a much higher price than $100. Not saying they aren't out there but if the seller knows what he has will usually ask on up to a couple hundred for one. Make sure there are no cracks and use the D washers as SteveO suggests. That keeps them from breaking. Have fun with your project.....it is a good year. Oh.........and glad to hear you're gonna ditch that seat!!!! Those things are ridiculous :D

In this case I would look for a K0 seat.

It is a K0... which leads me to my next question.... The same guy I am buying the triple tree from has a K0 seat for 215... It has a small rip in the vinyl that I can repair (used to do custom car upholstery for a few years). Everything else is good.  Would this be worth the extra money?  Vs the seat Steve-o suggested?

Salt - let me see that air box!  And also, if you have a k0 front fender I would be interested.
