Tires to fit WM2 and WM3 rims
« on: February 24, 2014, 04:11:41 pm »
I'm going to be using a set of Kimtabs on a Honda CB750 project - what are the tire recommendations for these admittedly narrow rims. i.e.  WM2 and WM3?

Are you using actual shouldered alloy rims....................???  If so, look at available tires to match a 3.25 front and 4.00 rear.  I have 100/90 and 120/90 on my street bike.  If you go lower profile than up the aspect ratio .............110/70 or wider. Bias-ply with tubes of course.

Not an uncommon width on Brit bikes, although you don't say what size? I used to run Avon Speedmasters on my old Norton Commando, I know of several on TT100s also. Hardly 'High performance and racing' but both excellent all-rounders for a road bike IMO.

No, the Kimtab magnesium wheels are the original cast wheels  - the first ever available aftermarket ones. But since they were made in the early 70's, they're CB750 size, i.e., WM2 front (2.15) and WM3 rear (2.5) which was considered "big" back then. I'm thinking 110/90 front and 110/80 rear. Or perhaps get real wild and go for a 120/90 rear, wow!

I have 18" Borrani WM2 (f) & WM3 (r) shouldered on my 550 and use 100/90 & 120/90 BT45's.  If those are 70's era magnesium rims I would have them crack tested.  They were prone to cracking when new, and will be even more brittle now.

Bridgestone, Pirelli and Avon all have good tires that will fit the stock rims.... ;)

OK.........Kimtabs..........were they first?  I have the same size rims from Shelby-Dowd. Bought them new in early '75. Tubeless Radials may work but don't mix-n-match.

Scrambler, yes, Kimtabs were first by a wide margin. I bought mine in 1971.

Tintop, not true, Kimtabs unmodified were not known to crack or be brittle,  but I already had them crack tested by an aerospace firm in CT and they were fine. Kimtabs were roadraced in period as well as used in sidecar motocross and had  no problems. Thanks for the 120/90 tip - I wasn't sure about the profile. Think  I'll try Dunlop 501's.
