Bullet connectors for 750 K6: solder vs. crimp
« on: March 02, 2014, 12:25:39 PM »
I recent picked up new/used controls from a forum member for my k6 that utilize the pin style connectors rather than the 3.5 mm bullet style. Since all the females on my harness are 3.5 mm bullets, I'm going to switch the pins out to male bullets as well. My question for the experts is this: should I order the crimp-style with a crimp tool from Vintage Connections or simply pick up the solder-style ones that I was able to source in Calgary? I'm just wondering if there are strengths or weaknesses to either type that I'm not appreciating.
Thanks!

I crimp and solder.....That just seems foolproof to me but you have to watch the temp to protect the insulation.  I also like those neat little insulators that are like silicone.  Makes for a real neat job!

I have not used that crimp tool.
I was close to order the tool, pins and socket from vintagecb750 but I needed to save money and use the pins, sockets I have.

Crimping tool I have match my pins/sockets, an old hand model for professional use (take 2 sizes, red/blue AMP type), not cheap one that usually is crap not making correct crimps that must be crimped together with proper force for the actual size of pin/socket and wire. Too loose will corrode and wire get loose and bad contact, too hard will cut the wire if  bending it slightly.

That crimp tool works great. I wouldn't do it without the tool now that I've used it! Buy a bunch iof extra because you'll probably start replacing others too. Get the 'covers/sleeves' too. You can always solder them too but shouldn't need too with the crimper.

+++1 on those covers / sleeves too!  I bought a cheapo HF ratchet crimp tool.  After I took the time to figure out how to set (tune) it I was more than satisfied with how it works.  It was a whopping 7.50 with a coupon.  I couldn't handle the 35/40 buck version on my budget!

You may not believe this but here goes.   When you solder it creates a firm hard connection.  This has its disadvantage too.  Autos motorcycles move!  They move a lot.  Wire is stranded to allow flex.  Wire moves when you turn or go over a bump.  It needs to move.  A proper crimp will last longer than a soldered connection.

I've used the 7.50 crimper from HF. Currently use the crimper from Del at vintage connectors.
It is a power of TEN better than the HF one.
I've had several failures from the HF one, That led me to purchase Del's.
I have no fear of failures from Del's. Still have to swap out some of the HF ones.
Yank on a crimp with the HF and compare it to a yank on Del's.
HF will pull out.
Buy a kit w/crimper and you will save in the long run.
Before you say I'm inexperienced I've got 30+ years working telecommunications, sound reinforcement, fire alarm, cctv, electrical displays for conventions and theatre.

+1 on what Vinhead 1957 says too!
Good luck though, whatever you do!

Vintage Connections won't ship to Canada, I don't think, so get your crimper and connections from vintagecb750.com
