CB750 sohc.. Ever used as a police bike?
« on: September 10, 2006, 08:09:55 AM »
I saw what looked to be a decommisioned police sohc 750 yesterday..  It was in front of some Harley biker dudes house- I might try to go back through and take pictures..  But it was certainly a sohc750, and it was a full-dresser, painted white...  Looked just like the Harley police bikes, but with the sohc4 motor.

Was this a conversion do ya think?  Or were there many of these bikes that saw police duty?  If these bikes did see police duty, I wonder what years they were used (and maybe some police department somewhere has a cache of parts!   ;)

The bikes look completely differeny with all the touring setup on them!

These were special models from Honda, I do not know much more on them but they are a distinctly diffrent model. Pretty rare really, If you can get one it would make a kick ass parade bike. Or maybe the local PD would buy it as a parade bike once it was restored.

Can't speak to later model 750's, but the earlier ones (K0 thru K2) appear to be stock with extras added. The parts list (copy) I have shows all the extra police gear.
We'll all be someone else's PO some day.

Back in 1974 the Brazilian Police in Sao Paulo used to have a lot of Hondas CB360 painted in white color, solo seat, siren, lights and a special gauge with rpm and speedometer in just one piece. The siren was activated mechanically by a rotor the side f the front wheel tire. There is only one CB750 and one CB 500 with same aspect but they were ridden by Officer with higher ranks. I wonder if any member has a bike like that hidden anywhere in the States. ::)

That's exactly what it looked like, only the one I saw was sohc..  Same front faring, same hard panniers..  Had a rear trunk too- I gotta take my camera next time I swing through there, hopefully it'll still be out.

Our local police force tried Hondas and Kawasakis in the early to mid seventies, but after a year or so went back to Harleys. The police couldn't break the habit of getting into top gear as soon as possible and lugging the engines. 15mph in 5th in the city isn't the real hot ticket.

In 1994, I produced a two parter "Tigers of Terra" comic book issue that featured an restored LAPD 1971 Honda CB750P in action (Tigers of Terra Volume 2 Number 4 ands 5). They also featured a 1971 Harley 1200 Police and Moto Guzzi 750 Police bikes, but the CB750P was the main feature. It also includes an article that shows the major differences between Japanese and Amerivcan (LAPD) versions.

LAPD version used many Triple-A parts, including floorboards and a solo seat. Had Harley type windshild, extra left lever for gear powered silen, turn signal was mounted higher to make room for emergency lights, gas tank was painted black with white panels. and black frame (not white). LAPD police versions never had white tanks and frame.  All police bike versions have solo seat and rear guards. I'm restoring one right now but I'm missing the left hand side Triple-A floorboards.

In 1969, Japanese comics introduced a long running series titled "Wild 7" that featured a highly modified 1969 Honda CB750P.
There was another long running series that featured a mad Japanese motorcycle cop that rode a 1979 CB750P.
Yet another long running series titled "750 Rider" featured a standard 1972 CB750K2.
Of course in early 1970s Tamiya plastic model company produced a very nice but expensive 1/6 scale model of a Japanese police version of the CB750. It was recently reproduced at cost of over $100 each.

Very nice bike but this is not a 1971 LAPD CB750P, it looks like a standard CB750K1 painted like the Japanese police version without the special solo seat, reflectors and rear guards. LAPD version had a different Triple-A solo seat, floor boards, special Gurney 4 into 2 exhausts, Harley windshield,  black frame, and so on.

Most cops back then still prefered Harleys because of the great twin cylinder torque power (which was powerful enough to push a car out of the way) but the cost of maintenance was so high that they considered eliminating the police bike divisions all together until 1975 when Kawasaki introduced their Z1Ps which made it cost effective.

Agreed, but recently  here anyway the cops have restarted their motorcycle branch. And yup - they are Harleys. I knew a few of the guys that wrenched for the cop shop in the 70s and they were in tears the way the Japanese bikes were treated. When you have all your torque coming in at 10rpm and power curved peaked at 200 rpm (Harley joke) and you get used to it, a high revving Japanese unit is as alien as can be.

Dunno about the LAPD Ted, but that bike in the pic is a genuine Honda CB750P, it's the same as we had over here in Oz, except for the dual seat that someone's put on it later, but the white frame and white fork sliders, paint job on the tank etc, is "factory" for everywhere else. Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

I bought it from the mechanic that worked on them at LAPD , in 72 he brought it home with everything police on it, siren, lights , solo seat, only thing they would not let him have was the radio. He hated the white fenders and replaced them with chrome ones , brought the bike back to "stock" the way I have it. BTW he does not have the police dress, threw it away. :-[
