I have a 1971 , one of 8 that were made in 71, sold to LAPD for $1 and sold to an employee in 72, mine now, has 7000 miles.
Very nice bike but this is not a 1971 LAPD CB750P, it looks like a standard CB750K1 painted like the Japanese police version without the special solo seat, reflectors and rear guards. LAPD version had a different Triple-A solo seat, floor boards, special Gurney 4 into 2 exhausts, Harley windshield,  black frame, and so on.

Dunno about the LAPD Ted, but that bike in the pic is a genuine Honda CB750P, it's the same as we had over here in Oz, except for the dual seat that someone's put on it later, but the white frame and white fork sliders, paint job on the tank etc, is "factory" for everywhere else. Cheers, Terry. ;D
It's painted like the CB750P from the Japanese Police (like the Tamiya model kit) without the saddlebags. solo seat and single speedometer/headlight assembly (like the CB450P). None of the American police bikes had white frames, none originally anyway. LAPD version was a stock CB750K1 converted using American made local parts, including a stock Harley silen from their own parts bin. There's a photo of a genuine LAPD CB750P (only two prototypes made) along with Moto Guzzi 750 Police from Motorcyclist's 1972 catalog. I actually visited the garage in 1976 where they still had them. I wanted the CB750P but they were still running so it wasn't for sale but they had that Moto Guzzi 750 that got its rear shaft drive housing busted during jump tests so thery sold me that for just $50! But it needed a lot of work to restore that.

There is One CB550P in england that i have seen, been in restoration for 8 years so far!
Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).

Remember "Its always in the last place you look" COURSE IT IS YOU STOP LOOKIN THEN!

Someone has probably already said this, but LAPD used CB750As for a while.  Yep, automatics.  During the 70s I serviced LAPD 750s for a dealer in North Hollywood.  However, here's some stuff you probably didn't know.  First, municipal PDs that use motorcycles usually give their officers a lot of freedom in how they are serviced.  They can take them home and service them themselves, they can take them to the dept. shop (if there is one and it is set up for bikes), or they can take it to a dealer, which most of them chose to do.  Also, practically all of the painting and electrical set up on each bike is done by the indvidual PDs, not by the manufacturer, the exception being the KZ1000P which came from Japan already painted black and white (and was discontinued two years ago).  The electrical work done on the bikes is the biggest problem they have.  The PDs farm it out to other vendors, and the result is something to give you nightmares as a mechanic, believe me. 

I once was working on a 750A while the officer stood watching (very typical).  I tipped the tank up, soe fuel ran out of the cap, and the special paint job on his tank promptly ran all over the place.  Was not a good thing.  Anoher time, I was test riding a KZ1000P for a Kawasaki shop.  The clutch cable broke during the test ride, so I started pushing it back to the shop.  Just a block later, I was surrounded by police cars with officers crouched behind their doors.  What a scene!   :)

Working on police bikes is probably the least enjoyable part of being a mc mechanic.

When I was in San Diego in 1970 I remember seeing a 750 police bike,they had cut the two outer mufflers and rewelded down beside the inner mufflers. They would have been HM300 pipes. Dannie

Sorry to hijack, but this thread reminds me of something the seller of the CB750 chopper I just bought told me. He swore that the motor was from a CB750 police bike. I assumed he was full of crap because I'd never heard of such a thing (whoops).  ;D ;D ;D

I've been trying to I.D. the engine which has no serial number listed on the case...just a blank field. Do the police motors have any identifying characteristics?

I would bet that your cases are replacements from an early chain failure. If you think about it, it just makes sense. Is the chop frame you have a Honda frame?.....I guess that don't matter either because any engine could have been stuffed into that frame over the years. I really have no idea how you can ID that motor. Just don't lose the bill of sale that you (hopefully) got when you purchased it.

Yeah, I've been assuming that it was a warranty repair deal, but was hoping that perhaps it was something a bit more sexy...like a police motor.  :) :) :)

Unfortunately, the bill of sale only lists the lisence plate number, since the engine has no serial and the frame (mid 70s Paughco I think) doesn't have one either. I'll be checking with the DMV tomorrow to see if it's even in their system any more. Unlikely since it was last registered in '86.  :o

I'm hoping that once I tear the thing apart I'll find a frame number somewhere...it's a custom chopper frame so there's always the possibility that it's stamped in a different place than a stock frame would be.

I recall seeing a Honda DOHC 450 Police Bike back in the late '60's/early '70's at a Harley/Triumph/BMW dealer in Buffalo NY...same solo seat; white frame; radio carrier on back; floorboards; all lights & sirens; etc...it sat there for many many years...   ;D
...stock 1972 CB500 '500 Four' undergoing re-assembly...
...Stock 1972 CL450 'Scrambler' also being re-assembled...

way back in the old days,aftermarket frames didnt have numbers,the local dmv should have issued a vin number stamped on a plate then had it riveted to the frame,unless of course it was an old harley then it would be titled by the engine number.

I am looking for bracket to my siren #8,9 and 5...I have a CB500P, but bracket for 360/450/500/550/750 will fit I think. Anybody of you know about on...buy or swap in something Police parts
