Electrical issue debugged!!! Not a Dyna failure, but apparently a faulty ground wire. Enough of a ground to run intermittently but fail. When I last started it, it just ran like crap. Jay at Lossa diagnosed and fixed the bad ground wire and the bike was instant gold. I'm not sure why it behaved to make me think it was an overheating issue, but I'm glad it's fixed.

Yahoo! Its funny how many issues with these old bikes are in fact, ground(ing) problems. My re-wire took 2.5x as long due to improper grounds. Once corrected, well, golden!

Jay seems to be a very cool dude to take time despite their celebrity. Must be nice to have them, and others alike, so nearby.

Me too. Against my better judgemeny I just picked up a Dyna 2000 kit. Byzz assured me that the new units are "99.5%" fail safe and that the "forums" only rage about those 0.5%.

Enjoyed riding the 550 this last weekend, when it was not Egypt hot and muggy (for once) in SoCal.

The front is still a little wobbly for my taste. I purchased a spare set of '77-'78 fork legs from member Maurice (thanks!). I am planning to polish them up, since they are in typical condition (with oxidation and partially worn factory clear coat). I have also been in touch with Tkat, who apparently had a couple of his fork braces with higher bridges to clear the stock fender with '75-'76 fork legs. If he gets them done, I will try going with the Tkat brace, since it simply bolts on. If I don't hear from him, I will continue to polish the lowers and eventually rebuild the forks with the longer fork lowers and use my Tarozzi brace.

I think Voxonda is busy tearing up the tracks of Europe during race season. After that, I expect I'll see my preload adjusters. I can live with those priorities.

When I rode my '77 550 in the Chicago leg of Relay Rally 1 it started to run intermittently bad as I rode to meet up with the guys and got progressively worse as the day progressed. By the end of the day it wouldn't go over 45 mph and was clearly not running on all 4. Fortunately I was close to my sister's house and was able to limp over their (in the rain in 48 degree temps).

It took me a week to track it down, but it turned out to be nothing more complicated than the tiny nut that attaches the 1-4 condenser wire to the points had worked loose and was making an intermittent connection. It took 30 seconds to fix and the bike ran beautifully the rest of the summer including the Michigan leg of the rally.

My electrical gremlins are now resolved. The newest idiosyncrasy is that the choke on my carburetors will not stay put. It'll run fine and the choke lever will works it's way off abruptly and then the bike will sputter.

Today, I got my new fork brace from Tkat. The thing is a feat of engineering. Not as simple or elegant as the Tarozzi or a Telefix brace, but the cross-brace should clear the fender. I'm going to mount it tomorrow and give it a try. I wanted to exhaust this solution before resorting to rebuilding my forks with the 77-78 fork legs. The Tkat solution should simply be a bolt and go.

Tkat fork brace fitted. Great machining work (tight tolerances) and, most importantly, it is a drastic improvement!! Up to now, the front end felt spindly and wobbly. The front tracks much better. Definitely a worthwhile upgrade!

It is larger than the Tarozzi, but it doesn't look so huge when installed.

so you did get yours after all. i see he reduced the clearance between fender and cross bar somewhat, to avoid contact with the banjo bolts for the brake lines when the fork is compressed. but it looks like yours are routed differently so you won't have that problem.

makes a huge difference to the handling for the frontend, doesn't it?

FYI - For anyone thinking of changing their bars to clubmans, I highly recommend the Tommaselli adjustable clubmans. I have them on this bike and they are so much easier on your wrists -- since you can adjust the downward angle to zero or even reverse to an upward angle. Very sturdy, versatile and comfortable.

Under a direct light source (like the flourescent light in my garage) it really makes the green metallic flake pop brightly. The green is more subdued over overcast skies (see earlier post).

Thanks. Just a heads up. Goddfrey removes the rivits connecting the rotor disc to the carrier, and reconnects the two pieces with bolts (and loctite). This does not appear to create any issues, but you will notice the fasteners in place of the riviets. The carriers are also countersunk so that you can mount both rotors with the stock bolts; if you do not countersink the carriers, you will need longer bolts to fasten both rotors to the hub. This does not change the spacing of the disc to the hub -- only the length of the bolt needed to bolt the rotors to the hub. Kind of a slick solution.

I would also recommend the phenolic pistons that Goddfrey has. They are about 1/4 of the weight of the stock pistons, but MORE importantly, they will not rust or pit. I also augmented my brakes with stainless lines.

Thanks for the head's up, Don. My single caliper/disc set up from Godffrey came like that - with OEM rivets removed and replaced with Locktite bolts and nuts.

Did you have any fitment issues installing a 2nd set on the other side?

What did you use for a splitter? Slingshot?
