FYI - Australian Troy Bayliss (WSBK Champion and MotoGP winner) is also a big fan of the rear brake, in his latest book A Faster Way.  So is WSBK and BSBK Champion Tom Sykes.

I use both but, of course, the front much more.  I'll have to work on drills.

Each to his own Don, there are racers that don't use it at all, personal, preference as well, some guys only use it to control wheel spin exiting corners, or stability mid corner, I mainly use it when riding slow for balance and stability, sometimes for scrubbing speed mid corner while holding a steady throttle, never with the throttle off {in a corner}, I've had guys tell me I'm mad because I use the front deep into the corner entrance, get to know your bike well and use the brakes as you see fit, Always buy the best tires you can, everyone's different.. The rear brake has probably thrown more riders down the road than any other factors combined....
PS, I'm a lot slower now {self preservation has kicked in}.... ;D
Who told you CycleX weren't selling them any more..{I inquired a little while ago and they could still get them}? As far as I know they never made the hub so its still a part that can be bought, they aren't the only shop selling light hubs either.. ;)
Cal, I wasn't referring to the "adapted" rear hub, I'm sure that's heavy too, its the one they used on their 750/4 race bike.   ;)

Interesting tidbit about rear brakes..

I had been riding bikes for 25 years and thought I knew how to ride? Well, I learned a real lesson about the rear brake. DON'T use it unless you are an "EXTREMELY" skilled rider.  I still use mine when I'm just putting around town but once I hit the curves or open road, I move my toe back to the foot peg so I'm not tempted to use it. Any  time you apply the front brake it takes weight off the rear tire and make it susceptible to locking up. And believe you me, it doesn't take much in certain situations. If you are hard on the front brakes and lock the rear tire, you just barely have time for a quick "Oh #$%*" and you are on the deck. I know, I was there!

When I attended Mike Sullivans Race School in Spokanne Wa. The very first thing he told us was if we couldn't ride like Valentino Rossi, "DON'T USE THE REAR BRAKE"! He said most of the crashes from first time racers was due to using the rear brake.

Yeah, I won't dispute a Race School's advice given to Track Racing Students. And its very true, front wheel braking unloads the rear. But, applying the rear brake first loads the front wheel for better traction and stopping power. Not much braking force is suggested, just some.

And in my anecdote, my rear braking changes were primarily while heading downhill and/or mid-corner to adjust speed without changing steering angles. As you say though, to each their own-

I won't claim to be an expert of any sort about whether or not to use the rear brake.  But I do know from my years of dirt-bike riding growing up that the rear brake is very useful when you're trail riding.

Speaking of which, I just signed up for the MSF Dirt Bike course over in Alpharetta next weekend.  Looking forward to what should be a fun day of riding.  I have to do that one so that I can take my GS over there in March for an Adventure Bike Course.  ;D

Both classes sound like a lot of fun, Ron.  I have very little dirt riding experience by comparison.  I'll have to see if there's a local dirt MSF course.  I was also interested in going to Supermoto school.

If there isn't one near you, Delta flies from LA to Atlanta.  ::)
You could always come hang out at my house for a while and go to the one here.  And it's less than 5 miles from there to Bill Benton's house, so we could take you over to Honda Funland!  :D

That's pretty damn tempting.  I have two cousins that fly for Delta.  One lives in Fayetteville, too..  I'd love to see Honda Funland, too!!

Hopefully within the next 6 or so weeks, accounting for finishes (likely PC) of the front and rear, ordering spokes and rims from Buchanan's (assuming they are in stock), lacing/truing and tires.

Cal,

It is my understanding that lacing a Cognitomoto front dictates a certain spoke length and pattern.  Is that the same for the rear?

The front uses an inside-inside pattern and Bucahnans has the correct spokes for the front. The rear uses standard, stock spokes and lengths and pattern for the original 500/550.

Depending on what tire size Don wants to go with, correct?
Anyone anodizing their hubs? Seems like PC is desired more.
Incorrect.
PC is far more durable than anodizing. And, if you anodize the hub, the cush drive won't anodize equally because its cast, not milled from billet. We've been over this.

I was already set on black.  I just need to select the particular black.  Now that I have both front and rear hubs, it's time.

Good looking solution to a disc conversion.
