Time-Sert Length for alternator cover
« on: March 08, 2014, 05:36:01 PM »
Hey guys, helping my buddy out with his '74 750 today and he has a stripped alternator cover screw. I have 6mm Time-Sert kit coming in the mail as we speak (lucky for him I already paid for it). I was wondering if anyone had any experience with this and has an opinion of what length insert to tap in. For your reference it's the 6-35mm screw circled in the attached diagram.

My mechanic taps to the full depth of the original. Be sure the combined depth of the cover and case is slightly more than the length of the screw. Excellent choice on the Time-Cert

If a timesert is bigger OD than the helicoil..I would look at how much material is around it.

What I meant was the helicoil probably uses a smaller hole.. Sometime there is not much meat around it.
