A Reflecive Day 9/11/2001
« on: September 10, 2006, 06:51:26 PM »
If you can find it in your hearts to take a monents pause sometime during 9/11 to remember the 3,000 innocnet people who were murdered  5 years ago. They were people like ourselves sweating out a buck to take care of their families.

Dedicated to Sgt. Howard Bruckner 1950 - 1969. KIA LONG KHANH.

But we were boys, and boys will be boys, and so they will. To us, everything was dangerous, but what of that? Had we not been made to live forever?

While doing so let's not turn this into some stupid conspiracy thing. Just remember the people who died that day.

You're right Tom, this is an anniversary that we all need to at least take some time and reflect back on those whose lives were taken so suddenly. The ones whose actions caused the plane in Penn. to hit the ground (instead of heading to DC) were so heroic and gave their lives and saved so many by their actions. They didn't do it for any other reason than to try to save more from dying, like they were going to do. No one person should be thought any more of or less of than the others. They all gave the ultimate sacrifice. I can't even imagine what it was like for them or the family members (especially those who received that last phonecall, from their loved ones, to tell them good bye).

                                                 I have to go now,

I'll never forget what I was doing (driving to work) that day. I'll never forget what happened that day when I got to work...everybody was in a daze....it was like a bad dream. It especially hit me hard when I realized it was my 2nd granddaughters 4th birthday.Every year for the rest of my life....I will remember the tragedy of 9-11 but will see a ray of sunshine to celibrate Jessie's birthday. Tomorrow is the day.

We were getting ready to take James (the special needs young man that I work with) to
the health department for some shots. I remember my wife telling me that a small plane had
just "accidentally" flown into one of the Twin Towers. I told her that I couldn't see how that
could have been an accident and while we were talking and watching CNN, we saw the 2nd
plane fly right into the other one. I just couldn't believe what I saw. I'll always remember seeing
the 2nd plane just before it hit the building. I figured that it was the beginning of the end! All
those poor people. Then there were those who were trying to rescue them. So tragic!!

I was at home and got a call from a buddy who told me to turn my TV on.  I could not believe what I was watching.  For anyone interested, there is a long, although incomplete, list of 911 memorials at:

911memorials.org/usa/

I plan to visit a stunning memorial in South Montrose, Pennsylvania (northeastern PA).  A woman there lost her son during the WTC attack, and she raised funds to build a hilltop memorial that has massive granite slabs on which all of the 911 victims are listed.

I remember driving to work that morning when the 1st plane hit.  I was listening to a talk radio morning show, and one of the hosts interrupted and said "Oh my God!  An airliner just hit the world trade center!"  I remember being outraged, thinking "How the heck can some pilot screw up that bad with navigation, and cause that bad of an accident!  He shoulda been no where near that building!"  It never dawned on me it was an attack.   They basically said they'd give us more news as it was available, and then went on with the program.  Later on in the show, she broke in again, and said "Another plane just hit the other WTC building!!!"

Then I knew it was an attack!  When I got to work, my building has a lot of monitors in the halls (my company does a lot of work with NASA, and there the monitors usually have some spaceflight live camera stuff on them or reports from a mission.)  People were crowded around the monitors, which showed the first building collapse, and the second building on fire (and later also collapse).  I remember looking around at all the other people, and seeing both men and women crying.  Later the building security staff locked all the doors, and we couldn't leave.  Our managers were running around frantically, taking attendance, etc.

Later on in the day, in our cafeteria, I looked out the window and saw what looked like the presidential helicopter, with two F15's flying in circles around it as it went- they were fairly close to the building when they went by- clearly close enough to ID the types of planes.  I saw an older women looking at them, and her face went white as a ghost.  I told her "It's OK, they're US military planes", and she thanked me.  I know that sounds lame, but I could tell she was afraid we were under attack there!

Anyways..  I also remember how clear blue the sky was- not a cloud in sight.  And, also no planes in the sky for a few days.  Crazy stuff.

All too often we (civilians) forget these losses. I am sort of backwards, I think to these first.

I read a lot of military history, and one thing I've learned is that they are all our greatest generation.  I mean no disrespect to the valiant men and women who served during WW II; however, US men and women have displayed the same selfless valor in every war and conflict.  Anyone who doubts this can read the Medal of Honor citations dating back to the Civil War:

www.army.mil/cmh-pg/Moh1.htm

And I do not forget the valor of the Brits and their "thin red line o' 'eroes."
