Yamiya absurdity
« on: April 10, 2014, 09:39:31 AM »
I can see the why the HM300/341s (original or repro) are worth what they are, but why in the world small junk like this is so outrageously priced?

Tiny kick spring and the unobtanium oil hoses   (these are repros btw).

Just absurd, and there are probably more than just these.

When you look at the minimum lot sizes required to get something made and the tooling costs included the costs stack up pretty quick.
And you also have to account for warehouse storage space for all these goodies.
The costs add up quickly.

If you think you can do better by all means sink whatever is left of your 401K or pension to manufacture these and other NLA parts to sell at a lower cost.

I was just going to post a smilar thread about how rediculous prices are getting for new parts for these things.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Honda-CB-400-F-CB-350-F-CB-750-CB-450-CB-550-F-CB-360-Front-Master-Cylinder-NOS-/151216170709?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&hash=item23352fa6d5&vxp=mtr

Dropped down from $600? No shyte!

I might have to start restoring a more affordable bike like old BMWs :)

Expensive...  but I note that those oil hoses are sold out, so the price isn't exceeding the demand. Is there no other supplier for 750 oil hoses nowadays? I see DSS don't have them.

I have a nephew who is a shop manager for a Honda shop, this shop in question is one of the oldest Honda motorcycles shops in the US and they have all kinds of NOS stuff all of which has a pretty stiff price tag. I made a comment to him about the price of some of the stuff and he said collectors/restorers especially those from Asia and Europe insist on perfection so they have no problem paying top $ for NOS parts.

Back in the day, talking early 70's here, my brother worked for Honda (UK) in Power Road Chiswick.

Clearly having nothing better to do one Friday afternoon, he and a mate of his totted up the price of all the spares to construct a (then) current model C50.

They were astonished to find the total came to approx 2.5x the cost of a new bike.

Spares are not cheap, bikes, cars or anything else. If it gets to become unobtainium I believe it is best to be grateful that at least one provider has made an offering, no matter his asking price. You can always decline and go . . elsewhere.

A BMW would be nice, but here is a reasonable alternative to the NOS you posted...

I suppose the whole supply and demand thing is unavoidable. Settling for cheaper alternatives with huge clumps of salt or parting with your hard earned money, neither seem worth it, very discouraging for someone like me who obsesses over the tiniest details.

Replacing 40 year old factory parts with NOS is expensive regardless which manufacturer's bike you are restoring. I have a '74 BMWm rebuilding, and trust me, these parts are sometimes more expensive than the Honda parts I've seen.

Could be a roundabout justification for resto mods... ;)
