Cleaned the forks as well to see what im dealing with. Lowers cleaned up ok. Dunno of the legs are salvageable. One is pretty badly chewed up near the fork seal. Will study my options...

Fork covers/headlight bracket looks to be in ok shape, though i probably wont use those. Imagining a more stripped down look for the bike.

Next session ill check the condition of the bushings. God knows what's waiting for me inside those.

If you can feel any of those markings on the fork tube surface with your finger nail then they likely will tear up new seals in a hurry.

Yep, these are pretty deep nicks and scratches on the stanchions. Easy pares and salavage yards are just a dream here, so im looking into the possibility of re-chroming. If thats out, guess ill have to pony up for new stsnchions orderedfrom overseas.
@grcmna2 were not far from Sing, maybe a 2-3 hr flight

I would not recommend used fork tubes. You can purchase them from a US vendor like Cycle Exchange. Shipping will be pricey, but you know what you will be getting.

Your fork tubes are toast. Even if you use new fork seals, the pitting will cut holes in them quickly.

Totally agree. But for a few more clams i cud chance upon a decent "modern" front end on ebay. Seems like replacement tubes are at least $150.
...of course that means the headache of matching the triples the steerer and the brakes and wheels

Yes but you'll also get better handling and braking.

I'll be travelling stateside in october and will see what solution i can take home with me. The hunt and figuring out what will work is half the fun.

Where in the US? You should make a list and bring back a case full of parts.

Where in the US? You should make a list and bring back a case full of parts.

Depending on where you are visiting, you could buy the parts you need on ebay and have them shipped to a member where you are visiting. Then you can pick them up and haul them home!

Got curious to see what i was dealing with under the paint of the tank and did a quick strip. A few dings and rust but no holes as far as i can tell. Should do fine after a thorough strip and clear seal.

Also prepping some aluminum bits for a bit of polish and am wondering if i should straighten this out? I can pass a tip cleaner through it so the passage is actually clear and kink free. Worried i might make it worse if i take a pliers or light hammer to it.

I would be very careful with that as I have seen them snapped off. A bit of heat may do the trick.

Don't care for the instagram style filter on your photos, makes it hard to see and help. Save that retro patina effect for when it's done maybe? My $.02 - everyone else probably loves it.

Bottom of your fork = fork leg

Thinner chrome part of your fork = fork tube

After a bit of frame cleaning i discovered im gonna have to cut out some rot and a crappy repair from before and weld in a clean gusset for the swingarm pivot/bushings. Argh!

You said it :-( Was hard to spot underneath all the crud that was on the frame when i got it. Consulted with a local shop, hes confident it can be repaired strong...it wont look stock though. Shame this wasnt better cared for.

Wow ,that's a nasty frame. What's the rest of it look like? Is the other parts of that frame thinned out by rust too?
I'm about to say something that I would never say but here goes, That looks like a good candidate for a hard tail.
I hope your welder is really, really good . I wouldn't even consider repairing that . tricky spot.

I don't want to be the pooper at this party but, I think it's time to split the engine down to find out if there is anything in it that is salvageable in there before you waste too much time and effort on something that may not be able to be repaired. If you open up the clutch side and every thing is white powder , and the primary drive bearing looks wasted.....like this

It's most likely wasted.
If you open top end and the cam and springs looks wasted.....you know

Please ,do yourself a favor , take the engine apart and take plenty of pictures of everything and get opinions here if it's repairable. At least you can get an Idea of what will have to be done, then you can decide if it's a project that you will be able to tackle and complete.

@rb55four i share your concerns, frames pretty solid everywhere else. Ill see how it goes.

Due to crack open the engine once i get it washed and cleaned.

Slow progress. Nothin much to add for now other than makin some bits shiny and getting the engine washed and on a stand. Waiting on some parts to come in for rebuilding the carbs as well as the top end gasket kit and rings.
