Gersh, im dying to see them on the bike too Bit dissapointed in the color of the rims. I opted for a clear topcoat and it killed the metallic sheen of the antique bronze color i chose.

Will have use of a friends TIG setup and shop after the holidays. Will bang out a seatpan/seat hump and the frame can finally go to powder before assembly

Lightly resurfaced the old KZ rotors. Cudnt knock off all the booboo's without going beyond the service limit thickness, so this'll have to do.

Cudnt resist a quick dry-fit mock-up as well of the front while i was at it

Paolo,

Those KZ wheels look great. Is that a caliper for a KZ, too, or did you de-fin the CB550 Tokiko caliper?  Have you figured out a rear brake set up (I cannot tell if the bike was together when you bought it or in parts)?

took the bike home in boxes. It was stored in terrible condition at the time so it was hard to telll what was salveagable or not. There was a KZ rear caliper in there but it was too far gone after i tried to clean it up. Picked up a modern 900 rr caliper and MC and will make it work by fabricating a hanger to fit the smaller axles of these old bikes. Not very period correct but the price was right. I guess using whats available and making it work is in tune with the spirit of "Cafe" anyway.

Thats the 550 caliper. I just cleaned it up best i could. Maybe there were finned and non-finned?

Way to use what you have, Paolo. The front wheel and caliper matched up with no machining -- nice.

Not sure if it was a direct bolt-on. Spacers etc. may have been massaged to make things fit but previous owner was running the setup before the bike was torn down and mothballed years ago, so i know it was at least rolling at some point

It's too bad you don't know the specific model of the KZ wheels.  Are there any casting marks or size markers?  This could be a good solution for those wanting to use a Lester/Morris style wheel.

If it helps, I think these wheels were shared across a number of kawasakis. Far as i can tell by looking at fiches, these are off an 82-83 Kz 750. Marked as Enkei-2. 18" rear/19" front. Rear disc though. Pity, im quite fond of the look of a rear drum like on the stock 550.

Took a break from bike building to knock out some quick n dirty tools that have been impossible to find at our local hardwares. An 18 mm spark plug wrench for the tricky 550 spark plug cavity and a c-spanner for when i do the headbearings.

Thanks. It was in pretty shabby shape when I took it home. Been getting lots of solid advice on this forum plus lots of elbow grease every other weekend. I think I put all the pieces back together properly ...Remains to be seen whether it will actually start

I concur.  What you've done with that engine is nothing short of miraculous.  Outstanding work!

Some "custom" action   was missing some fiddly bits on my rear MC, quicker (and cheaper) to make than order.

Nice, Paolo. Did you leave the superstructure in place to form the cowl, or will it be removed? Or will the cowl even be removable?
Its just tacked to the rail to help form the cowl and will be removed once the cowl and seatpan is done and welded as one piece.. Im planning to have the cowl/seatpan secured by just two bolts for easy dissasembly..

Bit of grinding and cleanup and this is done.

Chopping board plastic is an excellent material for seat base/pan supports.
