Cams R1, R9, R11
« on: March 13, 2014, 02:50:11 PM »
Hey guys, I'm doing some spring cleaning in the garage and found a couple cams with unknown history. I'm hoping you can help identify and decide what I should put in my engine.

The cams are R9, R1, and R11 (photo below)

I'm currently rebuilding a K4 with one of those cheap eBay 836 kits. Everything else is stock.

I have the respective cam towers and caps for the R9 and R11.

I can take more pics of the lobes once I know which cam is preffered.

Cheers
Dan

The R numbers are only the casting number, have nothing to do with the grind. A low R number  could be an early more preferable cam but they continued to use the R1 casting in newer grinds too.
If you have a caliper or dial indicator you could check lift. Use the left search for more info.

Use the one with the tallest lobes.

No way to ID those as Don says. If those are original sprockets then the one with the holes is PROBABLY a later model cam F0/F1/F2/F3 or K7/K8 which would be preferrable unless you could distinguish one as a K0/K1 cam.

Once I get the head torqued, I can swap the cams back and forth and determine the lift. Repost when I get there...

The late R1 marked cam I have came from an original ‘75 F0 and the clue is the orientation of the “R” mark, which is not to be confused with the early ‘69 K0 R1 marked cams. Pics show the difference in early/late R1 orientation. I don’t know which engines had the R9 and R11 cams. :(

Well, I did not know that.
