Topic: REFUSE to have your Drivers License scanned !

So, lately there has been much debate and reporting of loss of privacy here in the U.S. of A....... Here's a new one I came across today. Our new local gas station is a 'Speedway' operation and instead of typing your birthday into the register when your buying beer, they now scan the bar code on the back. The bar code contains your name and address, your D.L.# and your Social Security #. None of which they need . Only requirement is that the clerk can verify that you are over 21 yrs. old, nothing else. When they type your birthday into the register the comp. figures if your over 21 and would refuse the sale if underage. That's all the law requires. Refuse to be scanned, your not applying for a bank loan, merely buying a six-pack, sheesh !!

Did they sell to you when you refused? That sucks. But then again, they may just be
coverin their own @$$. Penalties can be stiff for selling to a minor. Then there's the "what if" factor, the minor gets wasted and kills somebody, fake I.D....slippery slope.

And to throw conspiracy theory #$%* into the mix, with national health-care, I could see alcohol and tobacco consumption being tracked and those individuals somehow paying for it. Not saying it's happening now, but it's definitely plausible.

We have healthcare,  drinkers and smokers do pay more but tracking is not needed, they just tax the #$%* out of them both of them!
That said we have government run liquor stores that offer airmiles a little more sneaky but still tracking.

B.T.W.... yes they did sell me beer even tho' I refused to have my D.L. scanned, 'cos behind it all they actually know the law too and just 'bluff' their way into getting your personal info.... effin' #$%*s!..... in case anyone missed it that's Speedway gas stations, beware or don't care, up to you !

Is this something that they request, or must complete for the alcohol sale transaction even if your an old codger like me as part of a company protocol ?  I do not like all that personnel information getting into these different places either. Look how well Target and some of these other places were able to handle it

I've never had a "real" Oz beer, but I have had a few in Germany, England, Canada, and Mexico. Plus I got to have many Gaelic beers flown directly to NY & served fresh from the barrel.

I keep waiting for some high school kids on a Friday or Saturday night to ask me to buy them beer like I used to do....never happens!!! the kids are more into popping grandmas pharmaceuticals and snorting MDMA than beers and joints I guess...I wouldn't let those #$%*s scan #$%*! And those kids are going to get that beer one way or the other!!! BEER BOOST!!! you know how fast a 16 yo is with 4 ,12 packs in his arms a truck bed to jump it and some hot ass back at the party that little #$%*er is going to have some superdooper superman skills good luck catching his ass.

I don't think we can call "big data" any kind of a "conspiracy" at this point that #$%* is fact and it will slowly be more and more pervasive as data becomes more and more a commodity that can be sold by corporations for a bonus profit with little investment.

I find now more than before that when you tell them your not giving out your zipcode or phone number for the database in the store because you cant be sure what they will do or where it will end up they are much more accepting of it. Of course I am one of those technical people that was nuts because I would tell you that all your communications are compromised and collected and that employing encryption and anonymity is what you need to do nowdays if you expect any privacy. waaaay before any #$%* came out.... ya and I'm #$%*ing nuts, right?!?!

The sad thing for me is that most folks have just given-up trying to guard their personal info. I still like to know who's mining info. and when something is in my control, as in this case, I will use my right not to comply. I called their customer service and they agreed that any customer can request NOT to have their license scanned and that only the birthdate is relevant to the sale. They also claimed that the scan only reads the birthdate  .... Make up your own mind about that. It's a very slippery slope when folks stop caring about their rights IMO......

I'm a firm believer to not give out information if it isn't necessary, like to retailers.  I also believe that scanning your drivers license barcode is only going to reveal to the retailer your DL# and nothing else.  They would have to be connected to NCIC computers to gain real time access to your information.  The reason for the scan is to cover their azzes in case there is a problem down the road somewhere as to whether or not the I.D. was actually checked, they would have your DL# on record....that's all.  In order for the retailer to glean any information such as your SS# and other things, like I said, would have to come from the state that issued the license.
I wouldn't worry too much about the DL scan, but still I don't think it's necessary, especially if you're an old fart such as myself and hasn't looked like an 18 year old for quite a while.

They don't need to scan your driving licence to know who is buying booze. They just need the credit card info.... :-)

Interesting thing is we have far more freedom of speech now than we did back in the 50's, 60's, and 70's.  Seeger's singing in 68 on the Smothers Brothers show was initially censored because of the line near the end of the song,  "soon even a tall man will be over his head". It was a direct shot at President Lyndon Johnson who was 6'4".  Seems pretty tame by today's standard.    Also this was one of Seeger's first appearances on "mainstream"  TV in a very long time.  He was blacklisted in the 50's for refusing to testify before Congress during the McCarthy Witch Hunt hearings when they were looking for Commies under everyone's bed.

To Steve F... WTf?....... the store does NOT need your Drivers License number, ever.!! The law states that the store clerk needs to verify you are over 21, nothing else. Sorry, but Americans seem to be very lax about protecting their rights, which is downright scary IMO.... .

To SPANNER 1:  WTF nothing.  ALL I said is that IF the store scans your DL, don't worry about it.  JEEZ you get it so far?  They don't get your personal info, They DON'T get your SS#, they DON'T know where you live.....it's just a number.

The bar code contains all the info. that's on the front of the license. I'm told the register in the store only 'captures' the birthdate. O.K. fine, but don't tell me that the rest of the info. is just discarded. If so why scan at all ? The info. is stored on a file with a link to the transaction in the store. So, in practice, you now need to give your name , address, D.L. # and date of birth when buying beer or tobacco, ' in case' your committing a crime

Already did that Flybox .... my computer savvy friends tell me that any kid with some know-how can easily modify the bar code to change their birthday!.... so the old fashioned way wins again. That is; look at my face, look at my pic. and birthdate on my license and do the math. Or if you cant do the math, then enter my birthdate into the register and it will tell you to refuse the sale if I'm under 21. That's what the law requires, not getting my personal details 'in case of a crime'.......

..or bay a phone...i have keept my telephome number seckret...but now sellsmen catch me up..the phone company sells the informasion to higest $..
