Frame Damage?
« on: August 16, 2015, 06:02:41 PM »
Ok, I'm cleaning up the lower triple tree on my basket case, and find the stem is bent at the bottom. Badly. And the lower bearing race on the stem is in 3 pieces. Obviously need another. Then I wonder what the frame looks like, and find this. Is this a repair, or is this factory welding. The steering stop weld doesn't look like the surrounding welds. Are the bearing races usually welded in like this? I've got a prefabbed hardtail ordered, and need to know if I should cancel, and start looking for another frame.
Thanks.

The races are not welded on! :o Yes, look for another frame, and triple clamp as well.
Don't fix it if it ain't broke!

Balls!! Kinda thought that would be the response. A guy can hope. That being the case, will all of my 1978 stuff fit other years frames, or just '77, and '78?

77 and 78 have a slightly different frame than the early K models, they have a wider chain line and therefore the top shock mount on the left side of the frame is slightly wider, the frame is also 2 inches longer at the rear... Start a thread in the parts wanted section, someone here may have one... ;)

That's a shame.  What type of frame is that.  You should be able to swap your parts over to new donor. If it's 750, there will be some idiosyncrasies as noted by Retro.
