Thoughts on this CL engine...
« on: March 16, 2014, 06:34:50 AM »
I have a 73 frame that will some day be a cafe build. Since im in no hurry I've only been window shopping for parts. I came across this engine and the price was rights.

http://grandrapids.craigslist.org/mcy/4293784826.html

So two questions:

1. Will the 70 engine bolt into my 73 frame with no issues?

2. The noise he mentions.... How concerned should I be? I'm not necessarily opposed to a rebuild, especially I will have more than enough time to do it while I save/look for other parts. Possible causes and solutions? Any permanent damage to something I can't replace?

Help is much appreciated as always...

IMHO, there's no downside to this deal. If you're going to go through the motor anyway, you'll find the problem and find it to be fixable. If not fixable, you can eBay the usable parts and recoup your investment. And yes, it'll drop into your '73 frame. RR
I was put on Earth to accomplish a certain number of things. Now I'm so far behind, I'll never die!

"cam chain TICK". Cam chains don't spin intermittently so I wouldn't describe a tick as from the chain. Valves that need adjusting might be a better diagnosis. If the engine is quiet enough to hear a 'tick' then it's probably in good shape. Plus an early 70 will be a good performing engine. For $200 you have a parts engine at the least.
As of today 3/13/2012 my original owner 75 CB750F has made it through 3 wives, er EX-wives. Free at last.  ;-)

Excellent news. Just arranged the purchase and pick up. Came out of a running bike, no case damage, and best of all got it for $150....

I figure for the price I can stand some where and tear.... Likely be years before it makes it's way into a bike anyways.... Plenty of time to clean it up...

My first bike was a  budget stock restore (excluding the exhaust).... This one will be a cafe inspired build. Considered doing a big bore with it. This will be my first real experience with engine work, so not quite yet. This is a ten year build considering I have a 50+ hour week job, 2 kids under 5, and to many other hobbies.... Slowly but surely though. Next in line though is a 73 xl175 that was given to me, hopefully quick and easy...

CL model Honda or CL like Craigs list????

Yes the engine will fit. The petcock might be on the wrong side of the gas tank.
Others will chime in.

All of these CB750 engines are 40 years old and any of the rubber parts can be deteriorating.
Like the cam chain rollers.
They all need to be rebuilt really.
No matter how many miles are on them.
