Project 1: CB650 Brakes
« on: September 11, 2006, 01:32:24 PM »
I was about to post this on KB02's thread about brakes but thought it might get people off topic there.

Ive never had any problems with my braking performance, but I plan on doing some other peroformance work on my CB650 and when something goes faster, it takes better brakes to stop it.  Rather than waiting to find out the hard way if I really need to do something, Im doing the brakes first.

Ive considered a lot of options and what Im leaning towards right now is adding a second disc of the same size and a caliper with more gripping power.  The 1982 model comes with dual discs but the 1980 doesnt have a place on the fork to mount a second caliper.
I'll have to look into it more to see if this is possible but I think I can make a part to radially mount the right side caliper and clamp onto the fork up top.

I dont think mismatched calipers will cause a problem and I should be able to mount a second disc without needing a new front wheel.

I'm open to any input just keep in mind I would rather engineer something myself than just go buy a kit and install it. :)

I for one can say that by adding another era correct caliper/rotor to your bike it will stop MUCH better. With the current dual-disc setup on my CB750, I can get the rear tire off the ground if I lockup the front.

Use a front end off a 81 custom.  Triple trees and everything.   82 nitehawk trees have diff mounting for bars and instruments.  Altough they have dual piston calipers that will bolt on to the 81 custom.
