Put in clutch, now motor turns harder.
« on: March 18, 2014, 04:35:22 PM »
This is the 1124 stroker motor, I was re-assembling it and noticed since I tightened up the clutch it turns harder. It's in neutral and still on the bench. It seems to shift through all the gears, The plates are somewhat dry and I haven't put the cover on yet. Any ideas what to look for?
I thought it looked like the pic in marks book when I put it back in.

Outer plate/hub alignment..........extra plate.............dry shaft

Disconnect the cable and try it...............if no, Back-off on the center nut and try it.............

No cable / no cover yet. I checked the book, the clutch appears to be correct. I removed the plates, it's still hard to turn and the kicker which I replaced completely because it didn't work still  doesn't. The oil pump isn't stuck.
With no plugs I should be able to turn even this motor by hand, correct?  It turned over fine until I put the clutch in and re-installed the head. The cam is timed correctly and there's lots of piston/valve clearance int and ex.
I hate to but I may have to start taking it back apart until something loosens up.

Wild cam lobes and HD springs offer a lot of resistance to a hand-turn. Is the resistance the same with or without the clutch?

Another test is without rocker arms. Back in same order as before.

It's probably just my imagination. Just in case it isn't I'll check one item at a time until I'm satisfied. I bumped over the 836 by hand, with plugs it turns easier and it has springs and a bigger cam.
I did remove the clutch and basket with no change.

Don,

On my 1030, its very difficult for me to turn my engine over by hand with new HD springs and a fresh bottom end even with the plugs out. I typically put my engine up with dry cylinders to aid in quick ring sealing so a lot of friction is at play. I can imagine with the stroker set up you're experiencing the same resistance.

As mentioned,  you can try backing off the lash on the valves to free up some resistance but it'll still be hard to turn against those spring and that big bore/stroke. Its the price we pay to go BIG!!

Thanks for the input, the kicker was broken when I got it. We assumed it was a bent shaft due to the magneto and big CC's causing kickback. The lever is auctually bent.
I replaced all the kickstart's internal moving parts but didn't really see the problem. My worry is I'll have it all back together and still have something out of whack. The only thing I can see suspicous is the oil pump has scratches on it, I assume from a broken primary chain / tensioner at some point.

I don't want to be that guy, asking the dumb question that can't be answered but here I am asking. LOL.

Brother, when it comes to this forum, there are no dumb questions. We've all run into something thats tripped up even the most experienced person from what i've seen over the years of being a member. By brainstorming, eventually the light begins to shine. I know you've got a lot of engine building experience, but at the end of the day, each one of our builds takes on a life of its own that often has no equal to fall back on.

I think you said you took all the clutch plates out and it was still hard to rotate?? Perhaps remove the hub and basket too just for grins and turn it over again.

This is a technical forum where such things and thoughts should be discussed. Very interesting and fun to be a part of it on distance! Always someone that has experience and knowledge, "been in the same boat" before.
Its better to be worried about eventual problems and double/tripple check before starting it....it can cost a lot otherwise, time and $$$. The engine here use special parts that cannot be found on the shelf anymore or everywhere...

I had many thoughts before starting my engine. The restoration of the engine was made during such long time, easy to forget things, done or not. Maybe something inside that shouldn't be there... :)

I took many photos during the restore/repair. I used them afterwards to check what and how I did it. I'll take more photos for all future steps so I can verify afterwards when needed.

I rechecked several things and put a short piece of tubing on the kicker and I can spin it by hand with a little move leverage. I guess I was just worrying too much. Thanks for talking me through it. The sub assemblies are coming together. I decided I'm using the raked frame but not an extended swingarm. It is a drag bike restoration but not exactly as it was, I'm going one step better on a couple of things.
