what were stock pipes for 1977 cb550k?
« on: October 14, 2014, 12:29:42 PM »
Hey, I've got a Honda CB550K (registered in 77) that I'm working on restoring. The bike has 4 into 1 pipes... is that the stock configuration? I've seen pictures since with different configurations. Thanks!

If it's a K the factory set up would be 4 to 4

Sorry, yeah, it is indeed a K. Sounds like I don't have original pipes hten.

Would a pipe swap like that affect the performance?

What type of after market pipe is it. One of the most common is the Mac. My 750K6 had a 4 to 1 Mac on it went I purchased it in 2009 and just recently got factory 341's back on it. Can't really tell any performance difference's between the two, just like the look and sound of the factory pipes. And makes the bike more $$ if I ever decide to sell also. How bout some pics of the bike ;)

From the age and rustiness of the pipes, I'd say they came off of another bike of similar age.
I'll have some pictures up tomorrow, I've been so busy working on the thing i've hardly had time to stop and catalogue what I've done.

77 Saw both F models and K models for the CB550.  F was 4 into 1 with swoopy head pipes gathers on the right side of bike, 069a carb.  The K model had 4 mufflers (high pressure)  and PD carbs with a bar mounted choke knob.  Putting an aftermarket 4 into 1 on the K model required a carb jetting change.

Hi,
My bike is what appears to be 77 k and these are the pipes that where on it. The bike is a bit of a Mongrel, so no guarantee that they are original and my knowledge is very limited.

Those look like the factory pipes. Besides Sankei 2024 stamping their is probably a HM404 stamp on pipes also.

Honda and Sankei. They still use them today for car exhaust. Thats one hell of a relationship.

I got some pictures up  in a new thread for my bike here:

More importantly, here's my apparently non-stock 4 to 1 pipes:

You can check the VIN and engine numbers from what I posted earlier.  Should be a tag on the head stock.

Thanks, yeah. The VIN says CB550K2, but out of curiosity I'll check the engine and frame numbers to see if they match.
