sealed beam replacement on CB750?
« on: March 22, 2014, 10:58:45 PM »
Hello
I want to replace the sealed beam on my 1972 CB750.
I have a 2nd hand replacement lens assembly ( the type that take H4 globes) to try and work out how to do it before I go and buy a new one to suit the bike.
The sealed beam currently in the bike has tags on the side of it to mount it into the headlight ring and also a tag used to take the adjuster screw with the spring on it.
Can you buy a lens assembly with H4 globes that has these tags on it or do I have to some how mount a car type lens assembly.
Thanks heaps for any pointers, this has me a bit stuffed

I'm a little confused by your description: can you possibly post a picture of it?

The OEM headlight is a Stanley sealed beam with notches that fit into the chrome ring that attaches to the headlight bucket. The aftermarket H4 rings may or may not have the Honda chrome part attached, but the "lens assembly" will mate up with the Honda chrome ring to make it fit OK. These have the hole in the back for the H4-shaped bulbs.

If you have the latter, it is just a matter of getting the bulb and installing it into the hole, and there should be a spring clip to hold it in place. Be sure to get a 40/45w, 50/55w, or 55/60w bulb in H4 shape, no bigger: more than 60w high beam will cause trouble for the bike's wiring. The H4 bulbs go all the way up to 200 watts, all in the same-size bulb!

Any motorcycle one out there will be plug and play, they make all the HL buckets the same as far as the light mounting. You may be able to transfer the stock Stanley trim over to the h4 you have already

HondaMan, it sounds like the light he is describing is has the mounting fittings integral with the light itself. I have a similar unit, from the description, in my F2 which BTW needs replacing too.

same as that one Krusty, thanks mate.

I think I found something on ebay that may work.  It looks like 3 rings (plus screws, spring)  that may adapt my "new" headlight into the existing bucket.

Hondaman do I put the high/low relays in the headlight bucket and connect onto the wires coming from the 3 pin plug

Thanks
Scott

Yep, that's the place! They will fit usually toward the upper back of the bucket. That's where mine are.

If you no longer want the sealed beam I'm interested in buying. No matter if it is blown -actually better if so-, as I only need the front glass.

Please let me know, thanks

G'day Raul
The headlight still works and at the moment I still need it as I haven't got the parts to fit a new one just yet.
Once I fit the new one I'll decide if I need to keep the old one or not. Although posting it from Australia may be a bit expensive.

I have 3 of those Hella H4 conversion units. Apparently some are made for motorsicles and some are not. The ones that I have use an internal metal reflector that ALWAYS breaks off and falls inside the glass. Eventually I learned to crush it enough to pull it out of there. Works fine without it.

I buy often from overseas, I'm used to international post. If you decide you no longer need it please let me know.

Thanks!
