New member and sohc4 owner in ohio
« on: March 19, 2014, 07:45:02 PM »
Hello all.  I may have cheated by making my first post in another thread first, but I figure i should still pop in here.

I came across a good deal on a '73 cb350f recently and couldn't pass it up.  What I first meant to be a cafe racer project ended up being a rather complete, original bike so I decided to keep it stock, replacing/rebuilding only what will make it function properly and safely, using stock parts.  I didn't have it in me to hack up such a complete original survivor.

It needs a small handful of things, but I've already made contact with a couple members who are helping me solve that problem.  I'll be spending lots of time getting it going over the next few months and figured I could use some help so I joined sohc4!  I'll update my profile tomorrow from a real computer.

I already owned a 2006 Honda CB600F so I think they'll make a pretty neat pair.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to the rebuild, and the discussion with you folks.  Maybe someday I'll be able to help someone in return!

See y'all

Oops.  Missed your posts guys.  Thanks for welcoming me in.  I'm near Mansfield ohio and here is my bike.  Keep in mind the weather has been terrible so I haven't even been able to clean it up yet. I have all the parts that are missing from the photo except the side covers, rear grab bar and one mirror.  Oh, and the pipes of course.

I think getting it on the road this year is a realistic goal for me.  Parts and rebuild kits have been rolling in these last couple weeks.

It hasn't been registered since '84.  I'm guessing the pipes rusted off and it got loud and ran crappy and the owner had trouble getting pipes for it so they let it sit.  It turns over and has compression so I thinkin can work with that.  It'll be mostly cleaning, rebuilding and lubing things!

Thanks guys.  A good cleaning will do winders for it but as of right now I'm not planning a full restoration, so it won't be a terrible amount of work, but it'll certainly be enough to keep me occupied this year.  I will ensure everything is 100% functional, rebuilding whatever needs it but I don't plan to repaint anything, as I want to keep it old looking for now.  That works better for my current budget, and I think gives character.  I love seeing old dull scuffed up trucks and bikes and such.  I'm not going full rat bike on it, I just want it to look like an original survivor.  I will polish all the chrome, and it will be kept clean and dry to preserve it the way it is.

Maybe later on down the road I'll repaint it all, but its not in the cards for 2014, and frankly I don't think its necessary.  Everything is still solid except the pipes and the center stand foot that rusted off.  The rest is just surface rust, or what we in the biz call "atmospheric corrosion", mitigated by removing the electrolyte, aka dirt and moisture.

Thanks guys.  Cheers!
