Thanks & recent CB650 build
« on: March 20, 2014, 07:17:06 AM »
I've been lurking for awhile & have gathered lots of tips/info on the CB while in-build.  Thanks to all who have posted their experience with the beast.....here is the outcome

Looks awesome. What kind of rear shocks are you running?

Lots of nice touches there, looks like pretty good ergonomics too!

Must be a total hoot to lay over in a corner. :D

Is the engine stock?

It's definitely a Frankenbike....CB650 frame (highly molested) & engine (stock), GSXR front end, chrome spoke 17" wheels w/ the typical 160R/120F tires ( I had Buchanon lace the front out of different hub & rim), header from 3 separate junk yard donors, Monster rear caliper, all electrics under seat hump (I built a mold for the seat & had it upholstered), rearsets from some ebay seller (forgot what from), shocks are RFY's until I can get the real deal, frame is powdercoated anodized-red....looks cool in the sun

The carbs were a total PITA....but they're good now that I've replaced the usual suspects (main jets, press-in pilots, acc pump, gaskets, fuel screw assy's, float jet, ....)

Stuff like that......

Thanks for looking

How much work was it to adapt a GSXR fork to the CB650 frame?  I've seen a lot about grafting modern forks onto CB550 and CB750 frames, but little about doing so for a CB650.

The forks were a breeze....All Balls sells upper & lower bearings/races that work perfectly and I just had to get 25mm bearings for the Harley hub.  The tricky part was the math for the rotor/hub/caliper assy....

Fitting a 5.5"wheel and 160 tire on the rear was similar; I used the 1" Harley axle, .125" sprocket spacer and moved the drive sprocket out .250

When done, bikes look simple, but the dependencies are amazing......this was my first build and I learned a lot

All Balls makes a conversion kit for this?  I read somewhere that you can tell them what frame you're using and what fork you're using and they'll hook you up with the right diameters.

Were there any issues with the triple tree stem?  Length and diameter of the stem would be the main thing, I'd think.  Did you run into any issues with the offset, meaning how far the tubes are away from the stem?  Do the triples hit the tank?

For mine, I used:
99-3541-5  Upper
99-3512-5  Lower
Freeze the races and they tap right in.....

Length, ID/OD & offset are great; no issues, no modifications needed

Tree's don't hit as I fab'd in stops on the steering tube when I welded in the mount for the GSXR steering stabilizer

Here it is when I brought it home...

Rear Shocks - Yes, those are RFY's you posted from Amazon.....I don't think they're very good, but there are issues with sprocket clearance given the larger rear sprocket I used, so I went with them almost as a mockup.

So basically the GSXR front end was a direct swap with the correct bearings?  That's cool to know.  Thanks for the input.  Nice work, too.
