Not sure what you mean by "flanges". The K1 came with "spigots" that has a flange where it meets the head. These are bolted to the head using the copper crush washer in between. Then the exhaust pipe slips over this spigot and the finned collars are used to clamp the pipe to the spigot (no flange at this point). After market pipes with flanges can be used by removing the spigots. Studs w/nuts are recommended for this (like the later K7/K8) to prevent damaging the threads in the aluminum head.
