400f cam chain replacement help?
« on: March 21, 2014, 02:53:14 PM »
I've got a '75 CB 400f.

The bad news is that the odometer and my ears suggest that it's time to replace the timing chain.  I've lined up a 219t cam chain, rivet link, and chain guide for the front side of the engine, but it's an intimidating job.

I can't find a reference or sale-listing for a properly-sized chain rivet tool for the rivet link.

I'd love to hear from anyone with experience with this job, especially if there are obvious missing ingredients. . .

The tensioner maybe the problem and not the chain.  Have you tried adjusting the tension?  You may need to use the screw driver trick to put the proper tension on the chain.  search the site there is lots of info on this topic.

a much cheaper and easier option would be to use a press fit type link that requires only a vice grip to install. I have used these myself with no issues.

It also allows you to replace the chain without having to split the cases.

You should still use a rivet tool for the link you posted. A lot better that using vice grips; That's a bit archaic considering that's the timing chain for your engine. I would be concerned with precision there. You can also use the soft link that came stock in the 500t and use a NOS cam chain. A better option in my opinion than the EK 219 stuff.

Agreed. You're also much more likely to need the tensioner blade for the rear of the block than the guide for the front that you've got.

Yep and here is what happens to the tensioner arm when the cam chain has too much slack.  My tensioner arm was still able to move so I changed both guides, had to use the screw driver to apply the proper tension. The spring on the tensioner will not apply enough push on the arm. If youre hearing the cam chain slapping around it not the cam chains fault....it the tensioner

Thanks, all!

Chain tool is on the way.

Anyone have experience with (or reservations about) the  4-into-1 repro of the cam tensioner?

It's the only one in a quick search that doesn't involve international shipping.

. . .also, someone please tell me that I've lead a clean life, and will be able to do this without pulling the engine from the frame.
