Who's got the best or worst VICE or Vise-----
« on: March 21, 2014, 06:15:03 PM »
  No get your minds out of the gutter  :)  not talkin' smoking, drinking or those poor working girls but Hey it might fit for me  8)  Thinking about maybe selling this nice Wilton 450S Bullet vise that I have been sitting on for a couple years or keeping my late Fathers old school Craftsman in use in my shop thats not as good.Using his old vice though gives me a good feeling. He had a tattoo with a cracked skull on his upper arm and when I was a little boy He said he got that because he put heads in the vice when he was in the Army to get people to talk  ::).   ;D
  I see quality old vices nowadays are bought, collected and restored, kind of like our old bikes. A good one is a very handy tool to go to when needed. What do you have ?.

After my cheap one died, I got the biggest cheap vice available:

http://www.homedepot.com/p/Irwin-5-in-Multi-purpose-Vise-4935505/202214083?N=5yc1vZc266

It helps not to use vice as an anvil to keep them alive longer.

Harbor frieght Worst vise ever!  I bought a bessey vise from lowes and it seems to be doing the job well.it has a pipe vise on the bottom and a square jaw on the bottom which comes in handy for fabricating stuff.

Thanks. The main part is a old cedar tree that was in the way of my shop build so I used it to my advantage,  And made my vise stand out of it. Here's a few pictures of what it looks like it's been holding on strong for 12+ years now.

I always thought that if you couldn't clamp something down and then hang a 6 foot cheater on a 3/4 inch drive breaker and hang on it with out the vice breaking it was no damned good. It also should double as an anvil in a pinch.

Here is a picture i found of what my REED 208 Vise looks like..........  ;D

              Weighs in at almost 300 lbs !   :o

              The jaws are wide !    ;

        I need to make a pedestal mount for it. I had to borrow a neighbors engine hoist to get it out of my El Camino's bed.   :o
        Mine has no paint on it now. I can't decide what color to paint . Maybe a greenish grey color......  ::)

Blue, Made in USA  ;) ! That one was forged at a time when they were building stuff to LAST;you might have to mount it down to a Huge steel table..like one that was used in an old Mill.

Blue has the fattest and Frank wins the tallest. Think the blacksmith vices are collectible also. Seem to see them around old farms a lot.

I hate these "show us a picture of your shop" threads, cause my shop is in such bad shape.  But as a man with many vises, I've been anxious to post.

My main vise is a 4" Littletown. It was my Dad's.

It's been around since I can remember, and I'm 57.  I'm livin' the dream, since I'm living in my childhood home, and working in the old man's shop.  I've added some stuff, and it's getting a bit crowded.  But I manage.  I also have a couple woodworking vises as well.
