Joe...........You could have a good discussion with Dave Murre about the 360 motor........He built a winning 360 flat-tracker a few years ago for a current pro-racer.

We will try to fire-up the motor today

Cam-timing is spot-on for opening events.........but a little short on closing......just a little.

Oil & filter, plugs, carbs, header-clamps, and a fuel-bag to be installed..........then ear-plugs.

I was tooooooo optimistic

The carbs are on.........after a few grunts.........and the motor turns just fine with the electric starter.........but no plugs because we do not have oil pressure. Before we take anything apart, Dave will try his big air-drill and socket applied to the crankshaft on Monday AM. That will give us faster rpms so it should push some oil. We can see that we have oil in the sump because the edge of the cam-chain is wet.

All of the painted parts are complete and waiting...................I'll post a few pics later.

Jerry............Grasscutter and his dad will arrive on Saturday, the 23rd, and leave on Tuesday.

My first time in 2013 I got no oil pressure until it fired. Worried the #$%* out of me. I installed the pump dry, filled the tank, put SOME oil in the gauge galley and top end without initial success. This past time I filled the tank, I tried to prime the pump but it seems most drains out anyway and dumped about 2 quarts in the top end. I'm thinking thats what does the trick since the stopper valve keeps the oil tank full. The 2 quarts drains to the sump that way and the pump picks it up and sends that to the engine. Much quicker pressure before firing up but never as quick as you'd like. Sweat it out

Assembly lube to the rescue, yes!

Dialing-in the cam..........Intake & Exhaust

Trial-fit of tank & seat.........front fender is complete

Oil-tank...........its smaller than stock and the filler is inboard beneath the seat..........stock hoses were retained. RS34 Carbs are on

We have modified the cap on the oil feed journal that most people use to fit their oil gauge.
It's been drilled out and we have fitted a hose tail.
We then use a large syringe attached to a short length of hose to fill all the oil galleries under a little pressure, only takes a minute.
Replace the original cap or gauge and Bob's your uncle, instant oil pressure.

Probably a little to late to help now, sorry about that.

Dave is very cautious about starting a motor. He likes to SEE oil pressure before it fires. Your tip will re-enforce my suggestion to him to remove the center-plug (former sending-unit to the idiot-light) and do as you suggest. He has the tools to get it done. Thanks for the help and encouragement.

HOT & SUNNY..............I hope

My daughter lives at the same latitude in northern California............it rained there today which is a good thing for the forest fire situation.........but will the rain get to the salt-flats?............usually not at this time of year. I think the recent rains were caused by changing winds in the Pacific due to the hurricanes. Now that event is past................but we will be watching the weather very closely beginning next week. Stay tuned so you get the latest report before you hit the road

The pressure side of the oil pump is supplied from the tank, not the sump. Brian's suggestion of injecting oil into the galley is a good idea.

So we pumped about a 1/3-qt of 20-50 into the galley............no go

We poured about a 1/2-qt down the cam-tower...........no go

We turned the motor over with a large high-speed drill and succeeded in pumping oil into the tank.........to the point that it was FULL

So we drained the sump and dropped the pan...........worked everything in the pump by hand...........re-installed with a new gasket.........sure happy to have spares on hand.........and spun the motor with the drill..............Yeah

Proceeded to hook up the fuel bag and the ignition...........watched fuel (VP-110) flow to the new RS34s...........applied separate battery power to the starter............and SUCCESS

THE CBR RUNS

We ran it through a few short heat-cycles at about 2500 to 3000 rpm..............advised by the cam and carb specs to keep the motor happy at those speeds.............or higher

I'll try to post a pic or 3 later.........

Final wiring and a long-term heat-cycle will be tomorrow...........then re-torque............installithe air-intake and tach, adjust the brake and clutch............then its time to RIDE...........short test ride............then a little longer............and then

2 weeks to spare too. I was beginning to think you were going to have to ride behind Dave on I-80 to get it broken in.

Mike........The motor sounds better than 'good'............I'm optimistic and Dave is happy. Dave was impressed with the ability of the RS34s to work right out of the box. We began with 125-jets. We will know a lot more after a 'test' ride........Friday or Saturday.
